Gamecube adapter issues

I'm new to steam, and I'm trying to play hammerwatch. I have a gamecube controller and a 4 port mayflash adapter that I'm using on my Mac and for some reason the analog stick on the controller only recognizes left and right input on the controller and won't let me go up and down in port one. Port 2 allows me to go only up and down but still only will let me use left and right input. Ports 3 and 4 don't let me use directional input at all. Every other button command works, can someone please help me out? I really want to use my gamecube controller.
