Easier workaround:
- get a steam controller
- enable "Use the Big Picture Overlay when using a Steam Controller from the desktop" (found in settings > In-Game)
- Turn on the steam controller before starting a game (this enables the big picture overlay when launching a game from the desktop)
- Hold down the guide button (on whatever controller - doesn't matter) for a couple seconds till the overlay with a menu shows up.
- Select "Disable controllers"
All controllers should now be disabled and you can use xpadder freely. It seems to work with every game possible. I just use my xbox one controller with xpadder.
Try to make your steam controller easily accessable, that way you can turn it on real quick before you start a game.
In fact, I've made an xpadder "quick key press" to select the "disable controllers" option, then turn the steam overlay off real quick. That way it's seamless. So I just press and hold the guide button, then press another button and *bam* - xpadder has full control and all the controllers are disabled.
I'm suprised to find another person who uses a controller/mouse combo with xpadder. How cool!
lol I know right... I have converted a bunch of my friends into hybrid gamers as well. I've been doing it for about 10 years now. Other than my friends I've only talked to maybe 5 people that do it. Most people are put off, surprised or completely dismissive of it. My friends were the same way until they saw how much better I could do in certain games with it. Overwatch, TF2, Terraria, just about everything.
I'll have to deal with the big picture overlay but that's awesome. Thanks for your help. I've put over 1,000 hours into Terraria and I haven't touched it since they added controller support because it screwed up my XPadder play. Thanks again.
This is what my controller looks like http://i.imgur.com/8xrrEMzh.jpg
All buttons, except X and B are fully functional!
This post is not meant for you. This is for people who use a controller/mouse combo, using software to map keys from the keyboard to the controller.
There are many advantages to this style of gameplay. Not like you'd know though...
Let me know if you get Terraria working again!
Sure did. Your new method fixed it. Only thing I have to do is make sure my 360 controller (the one I want to use) is turned off until I turn off the Steam controller. Once I turn off the Steam controller I can turn on my 360 controller and boom, I'm in the money. Thanks again. I tried using the Steam controller with it's mapping and it just doesn't feel right. Partly because of the Steam controller but mostly because of the features XPadder has that Steam hasn't integrated yet. Either way it's awesome to be playing with XPadder again.
Side note, I'm glad to see someone else out there doing the same thing.
Firstly, turning off a controller does just that. It powers down the controller. It does not disable the ability for a game or program to use it when it's turned back on. Once you turn it back on the same game or program will recognize it again. Hence it is not "disabled" just powered down.
Secondly, we are not trying to "power down" our controllers but "disable" a game or program from using them.
Finally, (if you had read anything) both OP and myself are trying to play our games using a controller/mouse hybrid setup. This can be hard to do if a game has built in controller support because most controller support can't be disabled in game and they usually have hidden button maps that can't be remapped (ie analogue stick movement). By disabling a game's ability to use a controller we can use a program like XPadder to map ANY keyboard and mouse actions to the controller. Using this I can play every game I own with a controller or controller/mouse hybrid based on how I want to play it.
I recommend using this to turn your controller on off when you want. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DQFGH80/ref=twister_B00FB50S0Q?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
You'll probably need the extension cord too

I use the same exact thing and it works great - no delays or anything. It's as if my computer was built with more usb ports to begin with
