I FOUND OUT HOW TO DISABLE CONTROLLERS IN GAME!!!!!
If you're like me, you like to customize your own controls, mapping your keyboard to your controller for a more personal custom preference, using software such as Xpadder, going as far as even using both a controller and mouse together.

Here's what you need to do:

- get a steam controller
- enable "Use the Big Picture Overlay when using a Steam Controller from the desktop" (found in settings > In-Game)
- Turn on the steam controller before starting a game (this enables the big picture overlay when launching a game from the desktop)
- While in-game, hold down the guide button (on whichever controller - doesn't matter) for a couple seconds till the overlay with a menu shows up.
- Select "Turn off controller"

All controller controls should now be disabled and you can use your keyboard emulator freely.

Try to make your steam controller easily accessable, that way you can turn it on real quick before you start a game.

I can't tell if this is condescending and sarcastic? Or if you're astounded by the discovery and it's helped you.
I too am an Xpadder lover and I was hoping this would work and it kinda did. The only problem I had was in Terraria. When I do this it makes the mouse cursor disappear. Have you run into this? Any way to fix it? I hate the current controller crap in a lot of game since many don't allow you to disable it. In a lot of situations Xpadder and a mouse are far better than a controller alone.

Easier workaround:

- Select "Disable controllers"

All controllers should now be disabled and you can use xpadder freely. It seems to work with every game possible. I just use my xbox one controller with xpadder.

Try to make your steam controller easily accessable, that way you can turn it on real quick before you start a game.

In fact, I've made an xpadder "quick key press" to select the "disable controllers" option, then turn the steam overlay off real quick. That way it's seamless. So I just press and hold the guide button, then press another button and *bam* - xpadder has full control and all the controllers are disabled.

I'm suprised to find another person who uses a controller/mouse combo with xpadder. How cool!

lol I know right... I have converted a bunch of my friends into hybrid gamers as well. I've been doing it for about 10 years now. Other than my friends I've only talked to maybe 5 people that do it. Most people are put off, surprised or completely dismissive of it. My friends were the same way until they saw how much better I could do in certain games with it. Overwatch, TF2, Terraria, just about everything. :steamhappy:

I'll have to deal with the big picture overlay but that's awesome. Thanks for your help. I've put over 1,000 hours into Terraria and I haven't touched it since they added controller support because it screwed up my XPadder play. Thanks again.

All buttons, except X and B are fully functional!
If one wants to completely disable controllers during games, one shall simply unplug them.

This post is not meant for you. This is for people who use a controller/mouse combo, using software to map keys from the keyboard to the controller.

There are many advantages to this style of gameplay. Not like you'd know though...

Sure did. Your new method fixed it. Only thing I have to do is make sure my 360 controller (the one I want to use) is turned off until I turn off the Steam controller. Once I turn off the Steam controller I can turn on my 360 controller and boom, I'm in the money. Thanks again. I tried using the Steam controller with it's mapping and it just doesn't feel right. Partly because of the Steam controller but mostly because of the features XPadder has that Steam hasn't integrated yet. Either way it's awesome to be playing with XPadder again.

Side note, I'm glad to see someone else out there doing the same thing.

Firstly, turning off a controller does just that. It powers down the controller. It does not disable the ability for a game or program to use it when it's turned back on. Once you turn it back on the same game or program will recognize it again. Hence it is not "disabled" just powered down.

Secondly, we are not trying to "power down" our controllers but "disable" a game or program from using them.

Finally, (if you had read anything) both OP and myself are trying to play our games using a controller/mouse hybrid setup. This can be hard to do if a game has built in controller support because most controller support can't be disabled in game and they usually have hidden button maps that can't be remapped (ie analogue stick movement). By disabling a game's ability to use a controller we can use a program like XPadder to map ANY keyboard and mouse actions to the controller. Using this I can play every game I own with a controller or controller/mouse hybrid based on how I want to play it.

I recommend using this to turn your controller on off when you want. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DQFGH80/ref=twister_B00FB50S0Q?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

You'll probably need the extension cord too

I use the same exact thing and it works great - no delays or anything. It's as if my computer was built with more usb ports to begin with

Fix for anyone who uses hybrid analog stick (any type of controller) and mouse with the help of Xpadder. I have been using a Playstation Move analog stick which is great, it is not cumbersome like trying to use a full controller and has plenty of buttons to bind keys. With some games the Playstation Move controller is recognized when ever a button is touched and all button prompts show a gamepad and if there is a mouse cursor on screen it will disappear till the mouse is moved again and vise versa. First I'm going to assume everyone has a Xbox controller of some kind, if not get one they are all awesome. Plug that in and start your game like you were going to play with the Xbox controller then alt+tab to your desktop open Xpadder and it will recognize the Xbox controller then plug in the controller you use for your hybrid setup and at the top left of the Xpadder window you will see two tabs one for the Xbox controller and one for the second controller you will actually be using (these tabs just look like a rectangles) then just make sure the second controller is being recognized (you will see the buttons light up indicating that it is working) alt+tab back to your game and the game will no longer think you are switching from gamepad to mouse and keyboard. The second controller will now be free to bind to any key and the game will only recognize what is set in Xpadder.
