issue with User Account Control and steam.exe
not sure if this is the correct section, apologies in advance if it isn't.

basically, when I launch or close steam, UAC pops up requesting admin permission, but under "publisher", it says "unknown". isn't it supposed to say "valve" or something along those lines?

as far as I can tell, I've not had this issue for long. I'd wager a guess at a few weeks.

I've tried opting out of and back into the steam beta under settings after searching on google, but no joy.

has anybody else had this issue?

Is this only when you launch the Steam client itself or when you launch a game in Steam ?

This is one of the reasons why I personally never install Steam in any program files folders. I always install Steam in a folder all by itself outside of the OS files and folders, on a totally different drive if possible.

thanks for the response.

I don't get any prompts when launching games. it only seems to happen when opening or closing steam directly.

Seems somewhat strange that you would get this when closing Steam. Unless it is trying to apply an update that is. What is your operating system ?

the whole things seems a bit peculiar to be honest.

My first assumption, and this is a shot in the dark here, is that Steam is trying to apply an update when closing. The opening of Steam is a no-brainer for the UAC to show up, but closing Steam maybe is the most important point here.

See if you have any programs from this list. Check your antivirus especially. If it is listed, post that here, please. If it is not listed, do you have exceptions in real-time scanning for Steam ?

I have both avast and spybot search & destroy. do you think one of them could be causing the issue?

Absolutely. Those are a definite problem here in my humble opinion. I suggest you get rid of those and get an antivirus that is not listed. You can try making exceptions, but sometimes that does not work and them and Steam just do not get along.

EDIT...Not specifically yours that you have installed, but see this...

Aggressive spyware detection software may block the normal operation of Steam. We have received reports that Spycatcher Express, Webroot Spy Sweeper and CA Pest Patrol (bundled with AOL's Security Center) may prevent Steam client application updates and connecting to game servers.

So in theory so far, Steam is trying to update because your programs that are listed there are blocking it every time, and the UAC is having to request your permission everytime you close Steam because it needs to update, you see.

I see, that makes sense. would that also explain the publisher being displayed as "unknown"?

in any case, thanks for the info :) far more helpful than google was

You are welcome. As far as I can remember, that is how it is for me also. When a DirectX update or installation is checked by the UAC for me in those cases that I have seen that, the official name is displayed normally, as you have touched on here.

I "think" that for some reason, it showing up as "unknown" is normal, unless that is somehow connected with the other programs causing problems here in this case. I am sorry, but I don't really know for sure.

As far as I know, that is normal.

You are welcome. I hope that solves your issue. That list is a bit old but a good source of information, as there may be other problematic software that is not listed.

But if you have software that is listed, it is definitely suspect to this problem, especially antivirus and antispyware applications.

If you need more help on anything, we will try to give it. I would say that your Steam client needs to be updated for sure, especially since it seems those programs have been affecting it for some time.
