I'm defanatly in safe mode WITH networking and all my drivers are up to date though devise maninger, windows auto driver web search.
yes that is correct, I can only conect to the roughter as the roughter to modem has a specle cable and the mondem only has the 1 output, which is for that cable.

I ran a speedtest which came back at 65meg down and 7 meg up.
I've not had anyother problems with coneting to the web or streaming films etc

Thank you. What about the router reset and the modem reset ? Have you tried that yet ? Here are the ports needed for Steam....

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8571-GLVN-8711

The bad thing about your setup there is you are totally dependant on that router. And as you saw from the page I gave you, the first step normally is to bypass that router and test the issue with ethernet only directly to your modem from your computer.

I have turned both off completly then booted them up but still have the problem.
I know things change and update etc but...
I ran the same roughter/modm for the last 4 years on my last PC with Steam with no problems.

I suggested the reset buttons instead.

And in the past 4 years, you did not have Windows 10. That is the main point here. I am still suspecting drivers there as being your problem. Not saying I know for sure, but just from my experience here in this forum. Many are doing the change to Windows 10 without checking for drivers first or needed BIOS updates when they apply, of course.

I never let Windows update my drivers unless I have no other choice. If they are not available from the manufacturer, then I worry that I will not get the best use of the device, if any use at all.

Again, that is just my suspicion here and I cannot say for sure.

EDIT..Or the router, as that is also a suspicion that I have, since you cannot bypass it.

I have ran win 10 for the last 6 months on my last computer again with the same roughter set up and Steam and antiviruse...
It must be something with the new PC, I'll contact the company on Monday to see if they can help

That is a totally different computer and as far as this problem goes, it should not even be considered to exist.

You have an issue with this computer. So troubleshoot it using just what you know using only this computer with your methods.

I highly doubt you are going in the right direction, assuming it is the computer. However, you could be right and it could very well be an issue with your wireless device in that compuer or "network adapters" in general, however I still suspect drivers and the router. Good luck to you in any case, and if you wish, please post back when you get it figured out and what you did to fix it, or if you want more help of course also.

Thank you for your help so far.

You are welcome and I am sorry I could not actually help you here.

May I ask you a probably foolish question then ?

Why use a router if you are cabled to it or are you just doing that to try to troubleshoot this problem that you have ?

Because that is not bypassing the router, as I am sure you understand.
Ollytron 9 ABR 2016 a las 20:30
The modem only has the one specle outlet which goes to the router and I've always cabled my PC to the router because it's close eoungh and it's more stable and faster then wireless
The Giving One 9 ABR 2016 a las 20:33
So you are connected to the router with an ethernet cable from your computer then.

I know you mentioned using device manager to update the drivers.

Just to clarify, have you tried to go here....

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z170-PRO/HelpDesk_Download/

if that is actually your exact computer motherboard, and dropped the menu there and selected Windows 10 64 bit, downloaded the LAN driver, and manually installed that and NOT use Windows to do it ?

Have you tried that already here, please ?

EDIT..There is also this utility under "utilities" there...

ASUS Turbo LAN V1.07.02 for Windows 7 32bit & 64bit / 8.1 64bit / 10 64bit.

My mobo is the Z170 PRO GAME, so I found the LAN driver and installed that, it didn't help.
BUT, after reading some other threads I came across someone who said try steam in "big pictuer" mode. So I did and it's sort of helped. I don't get the error now but it is very slow and keeps changing from one download to the other.
I have 3 games trying to update and it does 0.2gb every 3mins then swaps to one of the others then does the same. They will get there but it's going to take ages and hasn't really solved the problem.

So this is starting to sound more and more like your router or your modem could possibly be causing this, if you are absolutely sure you have the proper drivers installed so far. Way outside the box of thinking, this "may" also be related to SATA drivers not being updated and causing an issue writing to the disk, perhaps.

I went back in the thread to when you started posting here, and I hope you will forgive me, but sine you made the reply where you said you "hoped" the drivers were updated from whoever built your computer, I cannot see specifically where we have made sure you have ALL drivers downloaded and fully updated from that ASUS official website I have linked above, and for W10 64 bit. If you are not sure, I suggest you do that now and NOT just from the device manager using Windows.

Just to cover it again, did you check your ports for Steam ?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8571-GLVN-8711

I saw a case once where a user's roommate closed some and the user did not even know about it and when opened again, the issue went away.

Download each driver manually and install them manually. After this, I still suggest you stay in safe mode with networking to troubleshoot the problem, because we have not eliminated software yet as a possiblity. Staying in safe mode with networking, and having all drivers up to date pretty much means this is narrowed down to..

1. Hardware [Router, Modem, NIC (LAN) ethernet controler device].
2. Your ISP
3. "Maybe" a BIOS update that is needed. Only update your BIOS if absolutely necessary and using caution.
I almost seems as if your Steam needs an update because of the "big picture" point you made. As far as downloading game, if you have some connectivity but just changing speeds , that could be the region where you are trying to download that game from. You need to change your download region in your Steam setting to fully troubleshoot that possibility.

If you need more help on Hardware and Operating System issues, I suggest you ask for help in that forum.

Thanks, I'm not at home at the mow so won't be able to try these things until tomorrow but...
I did up date the LAN drivers from ASUS and GPU drivers from Nivida and I have tried 5 vastly different regions in the way you have posted before, but still no luck
It could well be the drive, it has plenty of room, 200gb free.
I will check the ports but I did try this earlier today...

I turned on my new PC and my old PC, screens side by side

I compared all of my steam settings to make sure they are all the same.

I compared all my antiviruse softwear settings (it's the same one I've used for years)

I compared all the eithernet properties, which are all the same.

I turned off my new PC

Then I downloaded a free game from steam on my old PC

This worked fine, it did 4.5gb in less than 10mins, it didn't stop, pause or lose connection at any time.

This again leads me to think it's something conflicting or stopping steam from working on the new PC

My old PC is.... I5-3570K 3.4GHz, 8GB RAM DDR3, 256 SSD, Win10 x64, (using built in Ethernet) Realtek PCIe GBE Family controler

I don't have the full spec of the new one in front off me but its a... I7-6700k, 16GB RAM DDR4, 500GB M.2 SSD, Win10 x64, ASUS Z170 pro game mobo (using built in Ethernet), GTX 980TI

When I had the GTX 980TI in my old machine steam worked fine then as well, but for this test it wasn't moved back in the old one as I've already moved it over to the new PC when it arrived.
