Youtube video's cause freeze in steam client
Whenever I try to view a youtube video in steam, like in community hub for a game or something, steam freezes. I can access my library, but nothing internet related, like community, store or profile.
All I see is the page with a youtube window, all black and a loading icon in top right.
This started a few days ago, and while it doesn't do it every time, it is most times. And when it happens I have to restart steam to get it working again

Edit:

Things such as Deleting cookies in client browser options, using task manager to close steamwebhelper.exe and of course the old standard "use a web browser not the client" have all been put forward throughout this thread, to limited success.

Deleting cookies will work until steam is restarted.

Stopping the steamwebhelper process will close the frozen window and so is a good workaround that stops you from having to restart steam each time it happens.

Using a web browser instead of steam client is of course a way of playing youtube video's, but that's not really the point. The point is that it should work in the client, and it DID work in the client.

People have mentioned deleting and/or reinstalling adobe flash, switching to/from NPAPI/PPAPI, but I haven't had any success with that, and don't know anyone else who has either.

You all need to stop watching videos on Steam. How difficult is it to copy and paste a video link into a real browser? Do you know how difficult it is to add an option to Steam to open any external link with your default browser?
I don't know either, but I sure wish it existed.

Thanks for clearing that up. I wasn't aware there was another way of watching videos than the steam browser. :steamfacepalm:

If you use the steam overlay to browse stuff while being ingame, tabbing and pasting into another browser is not an option.

This was meant to be ironical, YouTube crashing Steam has been a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ joke for too long.
On the other hand, I've never had a crash browsing with Firefox while playing a Steam game, AND opening multiple tabs is a huge advantage.
If I have a car, and the car has an optional extra that I would rarely use, then it had better work, regardless.
Because if they add a feature, it doesn't matter how often you use it, you should at least have that OPTION to use it.

This is why they added the videos tab in the community hub, so people can quickly click on a video for a game, so they can perhaps find out more about the game in case they want to buy it.
If I wanted to use my browser instead, I would just use youtube and search from there rather than copy and paste a link from the steam client to my browser.

So all they need to do is either fix the client, or remove the video option altogether.
Since Valve are now one of the laziest and greediest companies in gaming (although you could barely call them a gaming company at this point), they have done (and will do) neither.
If they'd removed the option to play videos, they would have practically admitted to gross incompetence.
So they are going to just continue pretending to not know about it.
It's called living in denial.
All they gotta do in this case is just don't read this pesky thread.
Problem solved.

At the very least we can learn a very valuable lesson here and that is don't concentrate too much on making more and more money because you are most likely going to become extremely lazy and greedy under its corrupting influence.

This is getting really frustrating I just quit using the damn Steam client to read/view Community Hubs and just use Firefox browser. Even with flash uninstalled it still freezes when playing embed Youtube videos. Like the previous poster said they got LAZY !!

This is not true, they changed the store page completely, now you can buy your games even more easily. They know where their priorities are : you spending more money, not you being more comfortable.
Use web browser for everything Steam that is web related.
Community, Market, Profile, etc.
Use the Client for things like Game Library, Streaming, Friends.
IDK why people try to use Steam Client like a web-browser. You realize how that even sounds? Steam can only handle one page at time really; cause even though u can open a link into a 2nd window, u can navigate with that via Address Bar.

Meanwhile you could just use a browser, with Extensions for protections (another reason to never use Steam's browser) and have an many tabs open as you want.

its about not needing to tab out of the game. if it was supposed to be only a steam overly for the hub then it should be restricted like the normal one. even within steam you can click through links to get out of it.
What's the difference? Steam Overlay still is just something where you are pausing your game basically to then interact with something else. And if you run a game windowed or borderless windowed (like you'd basically have to do if you have 2 or more monitors) then with the game in this mode, u simply press Winkey and there is taskbar, click browser with all your tabs... with mess with Steam Client browser or the in-game Overlay (at least the browser part). Now sure the overlay has it's uses and I understand that; Achievements, Community, Guides, etc.

But again you have zero protection via Steam's Web Browser; period.
Using it for anything Steam is fine; but it should never be used for anything outside of Valves/Steams webpages.

Exactly, no web page, no youtube video, no "allowed" sites on Steam, internet links should open your default browser. I don't want to use Steam to watch videos or browse - never used. Videos on games' store page work, videos on embedded pages don't. I think they are aware of the problem, but they are clueless - this is just poor programming. Steam should stop trying. Put a link that opens my browser, thank you very much.

As it is now, videos on Steam are crash baits - you click and Steam crashes.
IDK what to say about Steam Client; the videos on Steam Store Pages (non Greenlight pages) work just fine; as well as the Streaming Videos/Movies they offer.

But anything coming from YouTube; it just doesn't work right within Steam Client from what I've been seeing. So I just avoid doing that in the Client.

the difference is when u have a single monitor the game is still going on but u have to tab out and cant see if your alife again or the next round starts. my overlay recently just gets stuck when it opens a new window doesnt matter if video, steam store or something else.

hmm, disabling directwrite and videocard rendering fix most problem with greenlight videos

Yeah, happens for me too. It always opens new windows twice and the new ones don't react anymore. The only way to make them work again is usually resizing if possible and if not closing and reopening overlay and then resizing (which then usually works).

EDIT: I've turned off directwrite, will report back if it changes anything.
