Games Running in the background.

I have a severe problem. All my games seem to be run as background processes and i cant seem to fix it. any solutions at all?

Are you saying that when you launch any game in Steam, the game does in fact launch, but you just don't see it on your display ?

Do you not see any error messages or any other strange PC activity or inactivity that can help to describe the problem better here for us to help more ?

it starts it up but it just runs as a background process, aside from that, no problems as of yet. at first the exe just stopped working, then it degraded to this and i cant seem to find a fix, i run windows 8.1. i have played this game perfectly before so i see no reason as to why it should be doing what it is

Scan for malware using Malwarebytes.

Also, check this ENTIRE list for software that can cause issues, especially antivirus.

unfortunately that did absolutely nothing for me.

There was much info in those links and also from the links found within those linked pages. What exactly did you try from all that information, please ? Replying with posts like "that did absolutely nothing" really does not give us much to go on here.

Try to verify the game's cache. Do is exactly as it says to do it here.

What is your antivirus program ?

my antivirus is norton and i havent uninstalled or disabled it yet as i dont know how

There are literally several threads here just today that I have personally posted in where Norton was the antivirus. Norton is on the list of problematic software that you said did nothing to help. And Norton has been known to be problematic with Steam for a long time here.

I suggest you fully uninstall Norton and remove all traces of it and get an antivirus program that is not listed.

EDIT..Google "how to uninstall Norton in Windows (your OS)" or just go to control panel and uninstall it from there. Depending on what OS you have.

I recommend VIPRE ANTIVIRUS if you use Steam.

It never conflicts with it and has a better track record than 9/10 AV products.

Norton causes heaps of problems for 'some' Steam users.

Others are more lucky with it or it's just not working correctly.

Yea ? And people smoke for years also and have no problems either and one day they get cancer.

Do you want to take my word for it or should I do a search of this forum for Norton as being the problem and post the result here for you to see for yourself ?

The issue must lie in their installation/norton settings then because with the default settings I have had zero problems with Norton and Steam, if it were indeed a universal problem, I would have experienced issues, no? For your average Steam user, disabling their AV suite is likely to cause more problems than it solves (at least in the longterm). Also, the "cancer" in this case would likely be file/file system corruption of Norton files and have little/nothing to do with Steam/Norton inter-compatibility.

Whatever. You have no idea how wrong you are here. Disabling you AV is not a big deal as long as you don't go downloading questionable software and clicking links and visiting shady sites on the internet....just to test this in Steam is fine.

I have shown you a list that clearly has YOUR antivirus program on it. It also clearly says to uninstall the program to fully test it if the issue persists.

Does the issue persist ? Then uninstall it and test it again.

Until you remove all knowns in a troubleshooting process, you cannot move on to unknowns if the issue keeps giving you problems. Until you completely remove Norton as a possibility, uninstalling and removing all traces of it and rebooting your system, I cannot personally help you anymore here, sorry.

Again, I cannot promise it will solve the problem. But Norton IS a problem with Steam very often here and is seen as so by many that have had problems that post here, period.
