Other then that, no real reason to do so.
Honestly though, there those are also the only differences between pre-ordering and buying on day one as well.
I remember years ago with pre-orders and Limited Editions, we used to get a Season Pass added and we don;t anymore. The last game I remember coming with a Season Pass as a pre-ordered version was Saints Row: The Third. That is going back a long time ago. There might have been some games still going like that afterwards, my knowledge to the last game is Saints Row: The Third.
I'll never forget the time when GTA V came out as the PS3 and the Xbox 360 versions. A lot of people went out to the midnight sale and Xbox users were able to play the game straight away and the PS users, when they installed the game, the game was locked until 8:00am. I wonder if there's any other games that we can buy early that are locked until the release date. I know early downloading can be classed to beating a lot of slow downloading when so many people are downloading the same game on the release date, however, pre-ordering and downloading early can still have too many downloading at the same time then as well where it defeats that purpose of pre-ordering. I remember when GTA V game out on the PC and I bought it from Amazon, it took me over day to download and an update that was over 8MB's took hours and I was using a fast internet connection, then as well. This is how bad so many on one server can slow it down so much.
I almost forgot. Pre-ordering at Steam is not a good idea because it blocks us from buying anything that is already out where things can be downloaded in order as they were purchased. I remember ages ago I pre-ordered a DLC for a game and when I went to buy another game, the game wouldn't download. Then something crossed my mind. I removed the DLC from my basket and then my game that I purchased afterwards started downloading.
This doesn't happen like you suggest it does.
I've pre-ordered a few games an still made purchases between then and the game's release, with no issue.
... And you paid more for them and they were still available. Even now, they do the same. There was no real change there. Games still have season passes and have versions that include them.
Some people pre-order because they have slow internet and like to pre-load their games.
Me? I pre-order because I'll do what I want with my money.
