Can't move game to another drive (says it has shared content)
I am trying to move Spellforce 3: Reforced to another drive through steam and it says I cannot move it because it has 'shared content'. But, I don't want to have to download 100GB again. Is there a way around this?

If it has shared content then it's likely either DLC for the game or some engine parts that the same dev uses (maybe for another game?)

Unless you can work that out, you're kind of stuck.

About the only thing you can do then is choose other things to move instead.
When Steam says it has shared content, it means that something has an active file open within that game's install folder. It's therefore locked from being moved until whatever is accessing that file has closed it and released it.

Thanks... I tried after a fresh boot and everything, not sure why. The game has no DLC or anything else downloaded, nothing running in the background. I'd just re-download it but another 100gb in the same week is brutal.

It could simply be that you were using File Explorer in Windows to look at the folder and having that open can do that.
Do you have any other Spellforce3 content installed like the server or modding tools

Also note that serveral 'stand alone' expansions exist that you might also have installed

https://store.steampowered.com/app/817540/SpellForce_3_Soul_Harvest/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1154040/SpellForce_3_Fallen_God/

These all share the same data so if you try to move one you have to move them all

So it comes with those installed, nothing shows up in my game list but the game though.. I can't remove them or anything. I can't cut/paste either which is weird. I get a generic error when trying. I will have to bite the bullet and just redownload everything I guess.
Call of duty Modern warfare remastered can't move to other storage drive
i think you can get backup but im not sure

but if you can get backup just after geting backup delete(uninstall)the game and then download game
I just move manually the games then uninstall it on steam and install to the driver that I've move.
similar problem here. except the game(s) in question is Half Life 2 + the episodes. I dont have any windows explorer tabs open, no games running, yet the transfer instantly fails due to "shared content"

That's down to other Valve Source games sharing data - games like Left 4 Dead, Portal and all that.

So your best bet is to either uninstall them or move them too.
You can do one of the following:
1. Uninstall game and then download/install in desired location.
2. Make a backup of the game through Steam backup, uninstall game, and then finally restore game in desired location.
3. Manually move the game and corresponding .acf file to desired location. Steam should download content that was shared, duplicating it in the new location as necessary when you run the game.
edit: Could not verify if this is the case for these particular games at this time.

tried option 1/2, got a message in the install window that read "install folder cannot be changed"

tried manually moving the game, then uninstalling it from the old location, and then re-installing, again received the "install folder cannot be changed" message

really annoying, because Sourcemods only work if they're on the C drive, and for whatever reason, despite having ALL of the Source SDK's installed on my C drive, none of the sourcemods that worked for me not even two years ago, no longer get past the initial loading screen
