I want my profile to stay private but I want people to add me as friend

Anyone can add you as a friend if your profile is private, you just need to accept the invitation.

If you mean you only want friends to see your profile, go to Edit Profile and then Privacy Settings and change it to Friends Only.

Oh okay thanks. I was under the impression that if profile is private people can't add me friends. Then I should go quickly tell her to add me to friends as she looks very attractive my type

I actually added her because she looks identical to my ex and her hairstyle is just awesome short haired. I understand your concern and it is legit, however do not a priori assume the worst and must give it a chance. Scammers and bad actors are easily recognizable even after you make contact, so you are right keep your guard up but do not be passive and fearful. I am asking her for a chance to prove myself. Actually I added her so the ball is in her yard now if she is trustful person. Or who knows, maybe she is married and not interested and that's fine too just not my lucky day then

No that's not true at all.

Sure, plenty of scammers choose private profiles. But plenty of other people have private profiles. It's silly to assume that anyway as nobody can hurt you.

They cannot scam you unless you click on something they send you or something.

On the contrary, I've seen plenty of public profile scammers because they are trying to impersonate Valve staff or other users, or to show off a bunch of fake "+rep" profile comments.

Can someone please confirm if this works. I have one friend finally and she shows as friend but when I try message her the screen is all black and can't type

a private profile only keeps people from seeing your profile, nothing more. it does not stop people from contacting you
