If you mean you only want friends to see your profile, go to Edit Profile and then Privacy Settings and change it to Friends Only.
Sure, plenty of scammers choose private profiles. But plenty of other people have private profiles. It's silly to assume that anyway as nobody can hurt you.
They cannot scam you unless you click on something they send you or something.
On the contrary, I've seen plenty of public profile scammers because they are trying to impersonate Valve staff or other users, or to show off a bunch of fake "+rep" profile comments.
