No sound when connected to a TV via HDMI cable
The problem has to be steam related. Non steam games, videos, music etc. all work properly when the laptop is hooked to a TV but silence when i run a steam game. Anyone had any problems similar to this or can figure out how to fix it?

The problem is likely that your games have not been switched to the correct sound device after connecting to the TV.

A quick fix for this is to go into Sounds and set the HDMI output as the default Sound Device then relaunch the game or Steam.

Test Steam after changing the setting by launching in Big Picture mode.

Oh my god, thank you! Running steam on Big Picture mode worked and i got audio now.

Still don't know what was the issue though. I had the TV enabled as the default audio output source. Everything else produced audio but steam. I tried running Arkham Asylum on normal mode, had audio in the TV for the Rocksteady and Nvidia intros but not in-game. But, problem solved. Thanks again!

Hmph, i'm still getting no sound on NBA 2K15 however. Other games that i've tried so far are fine, just not the game i really want to play through the TV..

You haven't mentioned the part that you also DISABLED other devices like shown in screenshot. And did you check audio options in NBA2k15?

If you can't change audio channel in the game, it's the developers fault for not including options to force audiochannels. In that case, it's up to the developer.

Does it really matter if it's disabled or not though? It usually chooses the TV automatically when i connect it.

For me, it does matter..

I have the same problems with a few other games that have no decent audio configuration, the game decides what audio channel it prefers to use.

Disable and re-enable if you're switching between TV/regular audio channels. That's how you force ALL output to only use that one certain audio device.

Tried to force it manually, still nothing happening. I am so confused about the NBA game. It's showing that there is audio in the game but i can't hear it.Surely i can't be the first one having this problem with the game.

Funny thing is, if i'm launching the game, then switching over to the TV as my screen, the sound stays on laptop and it's acting as if the TV speakers are still enabled to be the ones to do it,,

No idea, but you can check the game forums to see if anyone else has the same problems.

Nothing on the official forums. As for the #2, i'm convinced that the game is broken somehow. Everything is set up like it is supposed to be but only NBA is without any sound. Don't see how i'm the only one with that problem however, googled so much about it and no threads anywhere.

Hi, I don't want to make new topic because this one is exactly about my problem. I have connected my latop with TV by HDMI. I installed NBA 2K17 2 weeks ago and everything was ok. It means that I had sound on TV and today I have no sound just without any reason. I googled already and try to fix the problem. One of the tip was to reinstall DirectX. I re-installed the game. Both didn't help. I have chosen HDMI as a main default output audio and disabled the rest. Also I am using Big Picture mode. Other game from Steam and other programs like Spotify works play normally. Also I have sound on laptop but it doesn't "go" to TV. Did anybody find solution?

Edit: Very very strange... I have just again restart Steam and sound appeared..... At the moment is ok

I'm currently experiencing similar problems. When my laptop (with Windows 10) is connected to my TV via HDMI and I'm in Big Picture, the audio on some games work, the audio on others don't. I've noticed that games that initially open in windowed mode, and I've switched to full screen suddenly lose audio. When I switch back to window mode, I get audio. It's not limited to windowed games, though. I can play Bioshock Infinite with no problems, but Bioshock 2? No audio.

To confirm, I've checked my Steam audio level in the mixer, that's fine. My TV is set to be the default audio device. My drivers are up to date. Some games work, others do not. The whole thing chaps my hide.

Two things.

First off, don't necro old threads. You might want to read the rules here at the very top of the main discussion page.

Next, there is a fix - it's in this very thread.

For the future, instead of necroing, make your own new thread and detail exactly what you've done and what specs are and everything. Don't just say "it doesn't work" because that tells us nothing,.
