Steam deck and steam link not good connection?
Hello everyone,

I’ve had the Steam deck since launch and it’s fine. I recently bought from CEX and factory reset the Steam link device.

I have 1Gbps internet so average download is about 900Mbps and upload is around 100 which is perfectly fine for anyone.

Anyway, my Steam deck is on the 5Ghz WiFi band and the steam link is plugged in via Ethernet which is great.

I done a test on the link and it shows like 5mb and then another was 30mbps which is odd.

When using the steam link with the steam deck I’ve had a few crashes so the deck go completely off, the steam link is laggy or pauses at times. Maybe I should do a factory reset on the deck? Never done that since I had it and set it up.

It’s very strange why on superb connection the performance is terrible. I did take a look at the troubleshoot page and I’ve done all that bar ports but really unsure why this is just so bad.

I do not use Qos so should I? The router I have it the ASU’s rog ac5300 - I’ve not opened any ports but then I’ve not had any issues and if I did open ports would I need to set it to the steam link device or the steam deck with ports open?

So I unplugged and reverted my modem back to the original virgin media superb hub 5 factory settings, same setup with Ethernet in the link and 5ghz in the deck and same results.

I think it might be a wasted purchase to try a different Ethernet cable even though it’s Cat8

What do you all think it could be?

Thank you for the help. It’s so frustrating and I am not sure what’s going on.

Speed does not mean stable. You could have a 10 Terabit connection and still get poor quality connection. 5Ghz = narrow band for more throughput/higher transfer rates but doesn't travel as far. 2.4Ghz can't transfer as much data as 5Ghz but being a wider band allows it to travel further.

You need to test the wifi connection. Any pin spikes , Loss, Choke will likely be the cause of your issue. 5Ghz should be fine in close proximity to the router/wired dock but if you're taking the deck into other rooms you maybe better of using 2.4Ghz. Even then there are so many things that will affect quality of the signal.

I don't have a Deck or I'd suggest ways for you to test the wifi quality to identify issues.

As for cables you don't better from anything above a Cat 6 cable with those speeds

Cat 5e Upto 1Gbps

Cat 6 Upto 1Gbps

Cat 6a Upto 10Gbps

Cat 7 Upto 10Gbps

Cat 8 Upto 40Gbps

The modem is RIGHT next to the TV in the same room less than 2meters away.

Every other device runs flawless on the network either 2.4 or 5 all solid. No connection drops, hiccups or issues. It's JUST the steam link to deck we noticed. Max 30Mbps connection I seen now and will not be higher.

I will try a different WiFi on the deck and see if that makes a change and maybe open the ports if I can on both the deck and link maybe?

Something tells me it's the deck because when playing Riders Republic the screen cuts out for a second to black and back and there is also a slight delay when playing Wreckfest and you can see it.

Could try asking in the dedicated Deck forum
