Download speed issue

I don't know if anyone can help me with this but this is an issue I can't seem to find a solution for. We have a 500 mbps internet speed but I can't get that in my downloads on Steam. I have a desktop using an ethernet cable and I can get my full speed using a speed test. But when downloading something on Steam, I can only get 150mbps at best, lower if I use a wi-fi connection. Now the issue is that my girlfriend has a laptop using a wi-fi connection to our router and she can download up to 600mbps on our network. I'm guessing something is wrong with my pc and I cant figure out what.

if it helps, my pc is only 4 years old with good gaming parts, it's not a potato and my network setting say I'm good for up to a gigabyte (1000mbps/1000mbps)

Could you have ip traffiic management app or QoS thats hold you back.

@Iceira no I don't have anything like that active, dunno if the ISP has anything like that for my IP address though.

@bidulless that doesn't explain why my gf's laptop has perfect download speed while I only get a third of it

try limiting steam download bandwidth (in steam settings, under downloads), not only has this been an issue with steam and only steam, for years upon years, but i dealt with it for years myself, before i finally messed with the bandwidth limiting option, cause all other "solutions" never helped.

no other platform has this issue and nothing on my pc, causes steams issue, that affect its download speeds.

now my steam downloading works flawlessly and majority of my bandwidth for steam downloading is basically limited close to near my full speed.

i have 600Mb download speed, which is 75MB speeds and i have steam limited to 68.8MB's

also as steam uses KB's or Kb's (mine is set too 68750KB's or 550000Kb's) , you may need to convert speed numbers, to put in the proper numbers, to get the desired limit.

your choice, but it helped me, so it might help you.

Steam can obliterate 1gbps connections. Steam can transfer 500mpbs over trans atlantic lines.

your steam downloads are limited by

1) your CPU
2) your disk IO
3) your anti-virus
4) your ISP

nothing to trouble shoot, as none of those have ever done a thing to fix the issue, or caused issue with downloads on steam or outside of steam, not to mention only steam has this issue, outside of steam downloading has zero issues.

what i posted was the only fix i have ever had work.

its not cpu, not disk io, not antivirus and not the isp's, nothing to pick from.

Your ISP could also be throttling your speed depending on your data plans with your ISP.. All ISP's do it all the time. It is in their TOS if you care to read it.
