Steam will under no circumstance connect to internet
Sorry if this has been answered before, I just couldn't find anything that helped.
And please excuse grammatical errors - english isn't my first language.

When I'm at home and try to open steam it says it can't connect to internet. So I check my internet connection and it's just fine, so I try using a different network (mobile data from phone with hotspot) which steam connects to just fine.
I get confused and chalk it up to weird server problem that just needs time.
When I go to school the after the weekend and open steam to browse the store, it connects just fine. I find it odd and think to myself the problem must be fixed. Later that day when I get home, I try to open steam but it won't connect.
I begin googling solutions and try a bunch, adding -tcp, using windows compatibility mode, deleting a .vdf file, redownloading steam, restarting the router and my pc multiple times - but nothing works.

So I get desperate and go to here, hoping someone is smart enough to figure out how to fix my problem because it's getting really annoying using all of my data to play games.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

one thing you could try is forgetting your wifi network entirely and reconnecting to it again. It almost sounds like it could be some weird firewall or antivirus thing causing issues too. I've had this happen a few times and its always a ton of trial and error to fix it.

Hmmm also sounds like OP has fiber/lan at home network and dont want to use mobil network.

Are steam port open at own ISP or NAT router ?
https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/669A-2F68-D1D1-A5EC#isp

Watchout for own local building complex fiber net thats house net, some can use some very odd solutions.

just because i said ISP also mean local house net if you have such. ( udbyder og ejendoms ejet netwærk )

and you make a mistake with -tcp ( that can be seen as connections into steam if you force it over in UDP packets can make it much worse. ) udp packet is seen as one way diretions and tcp is not that.

if noone told you to do it then stop doing it. ( and im talking about a ISP or local administrator ) not us here. or what you read anywhere. ( even if steam told you then NO this is local area issue only.

OP might explan better with home network is fiber or lan network with patch cable or are you using mobil only. ( and if own mobil should it not work with that )

Sorry for being difficult, but I don't think i fully understand what you're saying beyond -tcp being a bad thing to do

Thanks for trying to help, but this sadly didn't work

Have you been told to use it by own ISP or own local network experts, its that simple.

you fiddle with network transfer and might make things worse.

Google this cmd.
"netsh winsock reset"

and if that dont help ask own ISP ( udbyder ) if they know you need to open ports or NAT router or what ever it is you have , most router today is NAT, but you never know if its just a switchbox or patch cable to wallplug.

if this has worked before and it sounds like that , then test with spare pc. because maybe its your pc that is effect in system or cable.

Ok so i did the winsock reset thing, it didn't work. But using another pc on the same internet and same steam account works, so it must have something to do with the pc I'm using. I'm just confused why the pc that's troubling me, works on other internets but not my home one.

Im talking about other pc at your local home network to ruleout own isp and router issue, even on same cable if you can. ( what you try proof here is ( own router issue or ISP or your pc. ( we know its one one them but whise one or cable ofc , also possible )

Check for netcard drivers at board support and reinstall it, and while you are at all other drivers and BIOS.

I have said it before, there is you or ISP and there partners or steam in other end, you try ruleout 2 of them. and thats why you test with spare pc ( friends laptop or other pc in the house, i dont care if you have tablet or mobil and use wifi to get on router .

and we have not seen other steam user mentions this ever again.

but he do remember never got asked after he reset windows, again why i mentions this sometimes things aient logic, if data get tamper with. its rare but can happend.

That's what i tried, different pc, same steam account, same internet connection - and that pc worked fine.
Which leads me to believe there's an issue with the pc or the connection with steam and the pc.

They could try DMZ but that is very iffy since it also lets other things thru. I suggest trying all other solutions before trying DMZ setting. I would only try the DMZ settings as a last resort.

Most likely virus program is blocking it. Check both windows firewalls and your private virus scanners. Make sure to wishlist both the steam client and the game you are trying to play also.

Exatly and either you need to test and turn off firewall while testing or you have a app that interference with steam, web surf or other thirdpart app cause issue , if this actual have worked before, as we assume it did.

We could also ask you when did it work last time, and make a role back to that system restore point, if you have such.

Normal i will reset network driver reinstall them and that will fix most issue, but im think you blocking something on that pc.

Try the restore to a previous last know working might be better and quicker to update from that point again.

Yea, it could of been a recent windows update that also caused it. Are you by chance using windows 11 OS btw? I read it broke VPN's if that is what your using.
