My computer is working again, but I'm scared to boot steam.
You might remember me from my deranged post a few weeks ago, where I mentioned that 'steam destroyed my computer!' and yeah, my computer is working again, and I don't want to boot steam anymore.

The last time I did, it locked my computer in a boot-repair loop that never seemed to end. I'm writing this through the steam community website, and I don't know how to fix this problem of mine.

I'm using a windows 7, which steam did drop support for. So, I understand the sentiment that I shouldn't really be trying, but I'm telling you, that it was working just fine the very night before! I had just gotten off a run of isaac, and I was ready to go to bed. So, I did. I shut off my computer and that was that. I booted my computer the next morning - and the rest is history.

Does anyone know why this happening?? Cause, if I truly can't run steam anymore, that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks. :steamdeadpan:

I haven’t really ever heard of steam client bootlooping a computer to be completely honest with you. If it is related to steam, the best thing to do is try to update your computer (if possible), steam, and any peripheral software that might be involved with steam. you pointed out how valve has dropped support for windows 7, and that might honestly be the end of your search to be honest. if the software just isn’t working anymore, it might be time to say ‘goodnight sweet prince’ to using steam on your PC. i think you should keep trying and troubleshooting, make sure it’s not your computer or other software and it’s *actually* steam.

That's about what I was expecting, but I'm okay with it though. This computer is old and has served me well. If it's a sinking ship, then it's time find a new one.

I really should get a new computer, but I'm happy to say, it's working again! FR this time!! I'm gonna go play subnautica!!
Nothing bad should happen.

If it does again, upgrade to win 10 and look how tht goes.
If 7 runs, 10 should too.
last time i seen a boot loop, was from a bad ram module and since the ram module went bad, it caused an unstable XMP, which caused boot loops, that would work occasionally, or not and show the asus splash screen asking me to fix XMP/overclock.

dont know if thats your issue, just tossing out something you could look into.

could also be a cpu going bad, i have seen that happen before with a cpu going bad and wont allow XMP to work properly, or lose connection to memory slot(s), showing no ram in said slots.

seen some of that happening a long while back running win 7, while it was still supported on steam and by microsoft.

in any case, i dont think its steam.

also was it a BSOD? if so you can use a BSOD viewer and check the error codes, then search the on the internet, to hopefully find and fix the issue.

could try running SFC or DISM, to check system files for corruption.

also could check your OS drive for any errors.

I can't believe people are still using win 7. Upgrade then you won't have these issues.

its not a win 7 thing, it can happen on any OS :lunar2019crylaughingpig:

also, steam beta and stable client (CEF 109) is currently fully compatible with win 7, despite losing support.

nah, they can run w/e OS they choose.
i recommend upgrading to Windows 11 directly.

Windows 10 will not be supported in 2025.

Official date is October 2025.

Yea, and the support provided after that, you will have to pay for it. Microsoft already said you will need to continue support for windows 10 only by paying them for it.

Note that applications cannot 'kill' a computer. In windows app applications are above the HAL layer. At worst an application will itself stall and that's it

If your entire system is dying then your issues fall into 2 categories

OS Related

In this scenario generally its

* Bad drivers
* Bad OS files

These generally are seen in the event logs as when the system dies it will write at least somethign to the event log

Hardware Related

In this scenario its more nuanced since functionally any part of your system can cause the problem. The only way to really narrow it down is to hot swap various components.

* RAM - you can try running on 1 stick at a time to see if a particular stick is bad
* motherboard - more problematic to test
* power supply - this generally happens only under heavy load otherwise your entire system would already be fried
* graphics card - usually overheating issues can cause this so its worth checking if the fans are working and exhaust ports are not clogged with more dust than a Totoro movie
* CPU - this again generally is a cooling issue if your fans arent running or your AIO pump has failed

Heat issues can genreally be diagnosed with tools like HWMonitor to monitor the heat across certain components.
