Online Multiplayer vs Online Co-op
Hello, i'm struggling on defining what is the difference between multiplayer and co-op when online. Does multiplayer mean that its just click on it, and join a random server/match, while co-op means server-based, where someone makes a server and people join. If that is the case, does co-op have to be locked for only specified people, such as friends, or can it be open to anyone? I am just a bit confused on the difference between the classifications, and this will also help in the future.

Are you talking about any game in specific?

Co-op is generally cooperative, as implied by "CO-OP." No? What's so hard to understand.

...It really depends on the game. Online multiplayer is just a general term for gaming online with other people over the internet

@Baum in terms of specific games, i would say such games as Content Warning, Lethal Company, similar games to that without the tag of Online Multiplayer, but with the tag of Online Co-op. I understand the general terminology of co-op, but its the things such as if random people online can/cannot access the 'server' i am currently on.

It depends on the game, so instead of writing vague questions and leaving vague breadcrumbs, try doing a little research on a per game basis.

in those cases

co-op usually has a limit to the amount of people and you set up the server yourselves

often through the game itself, sometimes by purchasing a private server

think getting a few friends together to play a map

often the game will have

"official servers"

for people to join and those will have randoms to play with

but still a cap on the amount of people that can join

mmo stands for

massive multiplayer online

it is more things like wow and dcuo and swtor
