Failed steam Giftcard purchase at Gamestop, drained my sons debit card, who do I call?
My son tried to but $250 of Steam cards at the local Gamestop, the transaction failed saying 2 of the 3 cards were invalid, they tried 2 more times. All transactions failed, Gamestop shows no sale and has no information on the transaction. After we noticed his account was completely drained we got a whole lot of run around from Gamestop saying there was nothing they could do. The Bank said to wait as if the transactions did not complete they should fall of and the pending status should be removed. Today the money is showing as posted not released. Gamestop still says they can't do anything and I should call Steam support. There no option on the phone or online for this scenario, so how do I get support?

Thanks,
GrumpyGeek

Valve/Steam can't help with a transaction from another party. Only GameStop can help you. They are responsible for purchases made on their service.

Gamestop said they have noting to do with the digital transaction and that it is all done thru steam.

The codes are provided to GameStop by Valve but are not sold by Valve. The seller is GameStop themselves.

But apparently valve is involved in the transaction, the reason the transaction failed is that valve/steam said the cards were invalid.

I guess I will just dispute the charges with the bank.

Thanks.

Valve only supplied the codes for GameStop to sell them.

GameStop sold you invalid codes.

Gamestop sold us nothing, the transactions never completed, no merchandise or cards was received. We had no proof of purchase or transaction until after I saw the pending charges and made them give us the transaction information from the register, something so we could reference an event in their system. About 5 hours invested trying to navigate thru this, at the moment I hate gamestop, not real fond of steam since it appears they have some flaws in the system they have with the vendors. Hopefully the bank won't give us any problems.

If we help you.....
200 dollar limit in Gamestop for cards was not explained?
A receipt? None since transaction failed
2 of three cards are 100 100 50
Bank says a pending charges, gamestop states they will not end up being charged since no transaction occurred.

A small business contract was made up and never was completed? Small amounts of data left as a mystery to be solved. Scooby here's a snack and go fetch Sher Lock.

Talk to business, talk to bank. make police report if bank requests.

Thanks,

I have talked to bank, case has been opened. More unwanted stuff to deal with. I pretty much think it has everything to do with GameStop's system, poor implementation that submits the charges before it validates the cards with valve. If it is due to a $250 limit then that is just another point of failure at several points. A sign, training, and some code to reject the transaction. If it is not that, then it is likely fraud of some sort. Joy.

GameStop is slowly dying. I've read of others who have had issue with code from GameStop many times. Both invalid and already claimed.

If they have money on a debit card, then they could have just purchased the wallet funds directly from Steam to begin with. You can even us a debit/credit card to gift Steam Wallet Funds to other users.

There is no real reason to use GameStop.

I have had no issue buying and using physical cards at my local 7-11 or even CVS Pharmacy if I only have cash at the time. Best just to not buy from GameStop at all these days.

I hope you bank can resolve the issue for you.
