Steam won't open on Windows 11
As per title. Ever since a combination of either Windows update or Steam, I cannot open Steam at all.

I can see the process in the task manager but no windows nothing. No error messages. I uninstalled/reinstalled a dozen times, tried everything I could find on the troubleshooting guides etc but no luck. Support could not help.

Wondering if anyone has any magic idea or if there is a way to enable some "forced" logging so that I could maybe get an idea what is going on and why it won't open?

Any help is appreciated (I just do not want to reinstall my machine just for that... :()

Thanks!

netsh int tcp set supplemental Internet CongestionProvider=ctcp

Didn't work for me (Win 10) but glad that helped some 11 users. A recent Steam update finally addressed the underlying issue (not sure which build but I kept Windows Update disabled so it wasn't the OS) so we should be all set now. Thanks, everyone!

Did you fix it? I am facing this right now with after the latest update of windows 11.... Steam just doesn't open at all. It is in the task manager and did all the suggestions but nothing.

God bless you this actually worked for me. I had uninstalled my GPU Driver using Amd cleanup utility in save mode, I had downgraded my GPU driver. I had reinstalled windows using the built in tool and a few other things and this was what fixed not only my steam but my jupyter lab environment.

Can confirm this works. I indeed had set it to BBR2 earlier to try things out and it never gave me a problem...until in the past weeks!

It was set to BBR2 on my end, and that was the issue! I set it back to cubic (which is the default)

BBR2 was updated to a new version and apps didn't keep up sadly

That sounds like different symptoms, but here are the fixes you can try from this thread (in order of what you should try first):
- Try changing the default graphics card in Settings
- Update to latest Windows patch via Windows Update
- Update to latest Steam version (sounds like you'd have to use SteamCMD)
- Run `netsh int tcp set supplemental Internet CongestionProvider=ctcp` in command prompt
- Update graphics drivers (write down your current version first in-case this doesn't work)
- Rollback your last working System Restore point, if available
Be aware that nobody here is responsible if you break something. Reach out to a local technician if you don't feel completely comfortable making software changes.

What is BBR2?

As for windows 11 OS, the most current version of it, 24h2, is a buggy mess. Be careful if your using it for a gaming pc. Even microsoft knows how bad it is.
