Slow download
I just tested my Internet connection and its around 85mbit, yet my Steam download is at 4,5mbit.
I checked the Steam download Settings and untoggled everything. What is the Problem?

Are you with Deutsche Telekom or an ISP that uses their infrastructure? Force IPv6 or use a VPN. Telekom is throttling Steam on IPv4 due to disagreements in their peering negotiations.

I have the same problem. On xbox the download is normal 20-30mbs and on steam it is 600kb. I have checked the settings changed and nothing still the same.

Can you explain how to do this?

Kannst du erklären wie man das macht?

Exactly the same problem here today! I'm in Germany btw.
This problem is completely new to me. Never had such slow download speeds before in Steam. It drives me crazy. It's definitely not a problem with the connection or the router. All Downloads in browser or other Apps are full speed. Only Steam has this problem right now.

I called the Telekom provider and they said they had no idea and they had same reports but that should be a steam issue not theirs...maybe I got gaslit.

Steam doesn't give you download rates in mb/s. They give you download rates in mB/s. Your ISP gives you numbers in mb/s because it artificially inflates the numbers.

Think of it this way. If one ISP was offering a 100mb/s download speed, and another was offering 15mB/s, most people will be drawn to the slower 100mb/s speed because the number sounds bigger.

If your internet connection tests at 85mb/s and your Steam download is 4.5mB/s, then you're basically getting a download speed of 38mb/s. And yes, that's less than half. Now look at other things that could throttle you.

Your download speeds will be affected by a number of factors. Specifically, it will be throttled at the slowest of the following:

  • Your connection speed
  • Your disk write speed
  • The speed of the connection to your router (wireless routers in particular can often be slower if the signal is weak or if it's a lower frequency router)
  • Your computer's I/O
  • If you're saving to an external drive, your USB connection will have a limit
  • The server's connection (i.e. a heavy load can slow everyone down. In such cases changing your download region can resolve this)

Online speed tests don't check for all of this.

You got gaslit. Telekom wouldn't admit their shakedown against content providers.

I live in Germany and have the same problem. On Steam, the speed does not exceed 1mb/s. And I'm sure that the problem is not with me, everywhere else the speed is at max, only on steam it's bad.

did steam lost con again ? like allways? never had this , and other Downloads are fine. JUST STEAM !!!!!!!!! SINCE NOW. Only Garbage scammer steam

web.archive.org/web/20200205014018/https://wiki.hetzner.de/index.php/Double_Paid_Traffic/en

Hetzner suffered from this the same, until they paid up. Telekom is unethical and violates net neutrality.
