What about the fact that all my steam games were doing this? ESO, Hogwarts?
All of them were sputtering and fps loss
ESO is also a Bethesda game...but in terms of your other games then it could be a huge list of problems man ill be honest, it's just a matter of figuring out if it's a software issue or an hardware issue.
Keep in mind that Bethesda games are notorious for this as im sure you know but you did mention Hogwarts legacy and that does not run on the Bethesda engine (as far as i know anyway lol)
Here's a list of question that come to mind that could maybe hopefully help you:
- Have you properly restarted your pc in the last week?
- Does the battery in your motherboard (i forgot exactly what it's called) need to be replaced?
- Have you spilled anything on your pc recently?
- Is your power supply damaged or just perhaps old?
- Have you tried opening task manager and closing Steam from there and then have tried opening it back up after that?
So to answer your questions:
1. Yes I do it several times actually (restarting)
2. Motherboard is only a couple years old so doubt it’s that. Also no other low battery issues have arose.
3. Nope spilled nothing although my cat does like to sit on it. (Gaming tower)
4. Supply is a year old.
5. Yep I’ve done that.
Currently, I factory restored my entire pc. Erased every single thing and reinstalled windows and am redownloading FO4 to see.
I used afterburner on idle and was at 48 degrees
So I'm trying to think of what else it could be but if you're cat actively sits on it, especially while it is on, then that is definitely an issue.
Could windows have reset the screen resolution without me realizing it? I play on a 75” tv and usually keep resolution on 1080-1440.
oh so NOW you wanna mention you play on a rich man's tv that is big as hell.
yeh between that and your cat sitting on your desktop tower.
yeh that will do it there's your problem keep the 75" TV for your shows and movies and keep your cat off your tower have a nice day.
It's an easy thing to check on the desktop though. Although most games have their own resolution settings too, independent of the desktop's resolution. So it would be a bit weird for everything to get reset to 4K. Still it's an easy thing to check, and you should probably rule it out before moving on.
I'd also mentioned than your 10th gen intel CPU isn't using DDR5. That really only became an option for 12th gen and above Intel CPU's. You're almost certainly running DDR4. I don't expect it matters for the issue though.
If you just moved the PC I'd make sure you're not plugged into the iGPU on the CPU by mistake.
Aside from that I'd look into thermal throttling on the CPU or GPU.
Haven’t moved it. It’s been in the same place for the last three years. I was just playing yesterday with no problems. This morning played for about 10minutes no problem then everything went nuts. FPS loss, sputtering, slingshotting, lag, freezing (eg if I turned my toon, the camera would start to turn, freeze, then turn 3 seconds later.) even my keyboards keys werent inputting properly.
I completely restored and reinstalled windows to see if that’ll help.
How do I check the thermal throttling
Also it may be due to the cable/s that is worn out (or cat wore it out).
Now that I think about it i don’t recall the last time I did clean the inside. Could that be the reason for the sputtering and fps?
That was going to be my first suggestion.
The fact you have a cat around may exacerbate this too. Cat fluff is a killer. You should always keep an eye on the insides between 6 months to 1 year depednign on hwo much dust there is in your locale.
I live in rural Lincolnshire, England and we get a fair bit of dust from fields locally. It's not a great deal but it's enough. Plus cats.
I have a high end stereo, and I found out just before Chrstimas that the amp was sounding a little weird with an occasional buzz. Turned it on the next day and it shut off after a minute and kept doing so.
♥♥♥♥, I thought. This is going to be expensive to fix. So I thought I'd give it a lok round inside in case it was something obvious. Lo and behold the dust was unreal. I don't know how it amassed so much in a year since I last checked. But it had and I cleaned it out gave it a look round and couldn't see anything wrong.
I plugged it in just to check and see and surprisingly it works fine, so it was just thermal cutout.
It can be surprising just how mcuh or how quickly things can stack up.
no it does matter because games will run horribly if it can't keep up with the size of the monitor im too dumb to explain it right but it's true.
Yeh cuz the reason why cat fluff especially is killer cuz it produces a lot of static im sure yeh know.
No static only happens through movement. Sure, cat fluff can do this, but the real issue here is heat.
That's the point.
Well, I'm not too dumb to explain it. The physical size of the TV doesn't matter. 4K @ 75" is the same resolution as 4K @ 27". The resolution is what matters, not how many inches the TV/Monitor is.
And the simple fact of the matter is you can hook and Xbox or PS5 up to a 75" TV without problems and they're not so different than PC's. They don't have magic TV hardware to make it possible.
Console or PC, the physical size doesn't matter, just the resolution. Although I suppose it's not impossible it could be an issue with the TV. If it was a crappy TV or it's starting to fail, or there was an issue with the input or cable causing signal interference/loss that might be possible. But that would be a TV problem, not a PC/Console problem and would still have nothing to do with the physical size of the screen.
So that might not be a bad test, hook it up to another screen. If the problem goes away, but persists on the 75" TV I might take a look at the TV. If the problem occurs regardless of screen used, more likely to be an issue with the PC. Just to do the i's and cross the t's.
