How to repair a game on steam? (not redownload)
PROLOGUE
So, last night after downloading SMITE on steam, the game was crashing right after i clicked play button on the game's console window. Now having spent a lot of time i found the solution, which was to repair the game. For this game, SMITE, there was an option in the console, to repair game. but wen u click it, a message pops - "smite can be redownloaded from steam". But steam just would not let u repair the game even after u click the "Verify integrity of the game cache".

you would not download the whole game when all it needs is a repair.

SOLUTION
In order to repair the game without, redownloading, do the following :-
1. Right click the game in library > properties > local files > browse local files.
2. This will open game directory. Click common (the parent folder) in the navigation bar.
3. Change the game's directory name to "notSMITE" (or anything u could remember).
4. Now back to steam library. Right Click > Delete local content.. for the game.
5. Close steam.
6. Change the name of directory back to SMITE (the original name of the game u are repairing). follow steps 1 till 3.
7. Open steam > go to the game page > play > redownload in the same location.
8. Now it will detect local content, and the game will be repaired instead of redownloaded.

could you share more details. Like does it start downloading the whole game? because that will happen on the interface, but it will internally be downloading only the files that are missing or needs repaired..

Click Steam on top right corner
> Settings
> Downloads
> Steam Library Folders
Now you have list of all the different folders that contain steam games. In most case there is just one. Right Click it, And Delete Locak Content.

parent folder is the folder that holds your current folder. In this case name of the parent folder is "common"

This ♥♥♥♥ doesn't work anymore thanks to the complete garbage overhaul they foisted upon us in 2019. I can't add game directories, repair things etc. The game is already installed on my drive. I played it lastnight. Now it's greyed out and says the game isn't installed, and when I try to launch the exe directly it takes me to Steam and tells me to install. It's a big ass game too so when I tell it to install into the same directory it won't work because that drive is too full.

All of these are among the many reasons I refuse to buy games on Steam when I have at all any option to get them on GOG instead. I once had a broken directory and all I had to do was re-add the game with GOG Galaxy and boom, install fixed, launched as usual. Now instead I have to wait HOURS waiting for the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing to get installed again.

I HATE Steam so damn much at this point it's ridiculous. What a piece of garbage client that it's become.

Well, you can usually fix these errors by first restarting your system (and DO NOT use sleep mode at all). It tends to mess up steam if waking from sleep as the drive has gone dormant.

Similarly if you're using external drives or have your power saving settings wrong it can also cause this.

ALWAYS run steam and your PC with any power savings settings off. Full whack and setting your drives to not turn off under a period of dormancy.

Thanks Mate you saved me DL 124 GB with 1,2mb per second again was the only thing that worked.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
