steam recognizes my 3rd party controller as a xbox360 so i cant configure the back buttons

so my controller has 4 buttons in the back but since steam thinks its a xbox 360 controller, it dosent knows that those buttons exist, how could i solve this?

Go into settings and try to reset the controller type. You can change it in there. Also if this does not work, try to change in big picture mode and uncheck everything found in there, and only check the controller type your using. Since your using third party, i suggest using generic controller, which is a setting in big picture mode. Just make sure to uncheck everything else under it.

The last method is to remove it off your pc competly by uninstalling it under your windows 10/11 settings. Be aware you will need to plug it back in and reinstall all FIRMWARE updates doing this method. Make sure to reset your whole pc before reconnecting it to your pc.

First & foremost, how does this thing identify to the system? Open the device manager and check what that gamepad identifies as.

it indentifies as xbox 360 controller for windows

Well, that might explain why Steam thinks this thing is an XBox 360 one. Does it have a manual? I'm looking for an alternate mode.

so i actually forgot about the manual, i found out that i can long press the back buttons and the save a combination of commands to that button, but i guess i cant just have the button show up on steam and the assign a command to it

Check the manual for any other operating modes, whether those buttons cna be used as, well, buttons.
