If you're on a major one that runs loads of centres you may find your IP location is somwhere closer.
But if you're like me and has a non-mainstream ISP (Aquiss) then you'll find it's anywhere in the country. Mine tends to vary between Essex and Manchester and yet I live in Linconshire so it's ALWAYS hundreds of miles out.
Lookup on a few pages on my IP is between 0 (Worcester), 30 (Birmingham), 44 (Kington) and 143 (Boston). Some know the ISP, some see the parent company, others have no idea.
This is cause for celebration as Boston doesn't have ANYTHING. Lincolnshire is boring as ♥♥♥♥, and even hills don't hang around. It's flat and dull.
We now have a NODE!
We're not talking about Steam's download location but your node placement from your ISP.
Go ahead and see if that does anything here...

A few years ago I was sitting in my favourite cinema in Liverpool, UK. I made a Facebook post about what I was about to watch and checked in at the location itself. Checked my login history a couple of days later - it said that I'd logged in from New York. It was definitely my login as the date and time matched. Only about 3,300 miles out.
I understand the technical reasons why it happened but I won't bore you with them. It's just part of how the Internet works.
Yup, I've had several occasions where I've made posts a few minutes apart, whilst sat in bed in boring Spalding, Lincolnshire.
One claims to be from Manchester, the other from Basingstoke.
Figures. I'm in St Helens, Merseyside on a BT connection. Might as well toss a coin to see what location I normally get - either it's more or less right or it says I'm logging in from Wembley.
