Because there is too much I have to do on my computer.
I thought I described it clearly.
I want steam to save the progress of one of it's game I have to download to update.
That's not the connection they're inquiring about.
I can't see how I could make it do what I want it to do, so I thought another Steam user would understand my problem and help me fix it.
Just let the game download for however long it takes and do something else. Only you know your schedule, so economize your time.
Then Steam will check the files against the ones on the servers when restarting, sees that there are newer ones and restarts the download from zero.
Thats how it always worked.
In the end you can only either let the entire download run through without pausing it for whatever reason or make sure the game has no update scheduled in the near future.
I think what that user meant is why you have to restart your computer?
I work on my computer daily, sometimes for 10+ hours but i reboot the system maybe once a month. I just leave it turned on for weeks at a time. PC are build for that.
So there is really no reason to not just let the download run through, even if it takes a day or two.
- Opt into, or out of Steam beta.
- Or Redownload Steam client files, to do that head to where Steam installed, delete everything except for Steamapp folder, and steam.exe.
Ensure none of your 3rd party software messing with Steam files, and permissions.
Ensure when shutting Steam down you pause your download then go ahead to shutdown, instead of force shutdown.
Now idk why can't leave the download going, or couldn't simply just lower download speed via Steam settings, or using 3rd party app to limit speeds on Steam, if you need bandwidth on your device for something.
Please note, when updates happens your download can be reset when you resume download, it's ideal to finishes download asap if the game updates as often, this is commonly known for games with early access, and newly released games.
See, that's what I am doing, and it doesn't work. I pause the update/download, select "Steam" from the menu and click "exit".
Then I reboot the computer by selecting "power>:restart" from Windows desktop.
To me "forcing shutdown" would be just unplug the machine while it's actively doing something. I never do that :)
When Steam starts again, it starts downloading the update from 0%.
I don't think anything can change my bandwidth. Every app that downloads, does so at 6.8 mps, my ISP is AT&T (and I make sure no other apps are downloading).
Updating Windows requires a reboot.
It won't update until you close everything, then restart, while it's reloading it installs the update. It has to be the first thing you're computer is actually doing, you can't just update it any time, you have to do it the way they tell you too :)
