Need help updating game
Why doesn't it save the progress of an update? I have keep the update going or it will start over from the very start. Keeps going back to 0% update.

I bought Baldur's Gate 3 that is 120 gigabytes (this is not a problem about BG3, it's about my Steam client), It takes 1 day, 12 hours to download. 36 hours.

I can't go 36 hours without having to restart my computer, which logs me out of Steam. When it is started and logged back into Steam, the game begins downloading from 0%. Pausing the game's update DID NOT save the progress of the download.

Why can't I just pause that update, restart my computer, log back into Steam and start from where I had paused it?

ALSO, I managed to play another game, Civilization 6, while letting BG3 download. Got BG3's update down to 5 hours. I saw it was down to 5 hours and said "thank god", then I clicked Civilization 6 to start playing it another 5 hours

But now Civilization VI needed to update, which started the BG3 update to stop updating and go back to the start of it's update...DIDN'T save the progress of the 36 hours.

After Civ VI updated, BG3's update restarted at 0%...ANOTHER 36 hours.

I've been looking through Steam settings trying to find a setting that would let me keep the progress of an update while I rebooted my machine. But none of the settings seemed relevant to this topic.

What do I need to do to set it up so I keep the progress of the download?

And, right now, Windows just told me I needed to restart the machine to update Windows, which will put me back to 0% downloaded on BG3.

Why not?

Because there is too much I have to do on my computer.

That's not the connection they're inquiring about.

I thought this forum was where I could ask for help using the Steam client.

I can't see how I could make it do what I want it to do, so I thought another Steam user would understand my problem and help me fix it.

Just let the game download for however long it takes and do something else. Only you know your schedule, so economize your time.

The only time a active download resets to 0% after pausing and restarting is when the game in question had an update/patch in the the time the download ran.
Then Steam will check the files against the ones on the servers when restarting, sees that there are newer ones and restarts the download from zero.
Thats how it always worked.
In the end you can only either let the entire download run through without pausing it for whatever reason or make sure the game has no update scheduled in the near future.

I think what that user meant is why you have to restart your computer?
I work on my computer daily, sometimes for 10+ hours but i reboot the system maybe once a month. I just leave it turned on for weeks at a time. PC are build for that.
So there is really no reason to not just let the download run through, even if it takes a day or two.

- Clear download cache.

- Opt into, or out of Steam beta.

- Or Redownload Steam client files, to do that head to where Steam installed, delete everything except for Steamapp folder, and steam.exe.

Ensure none of your 3rd party software messing with Steam files, and permissions.

Ensure when shutting Steam down you pause your download then go ahead to shutdown, instead of force shutdown.

Now idk why can't leave the download going, or couldn't simply just lower download speed via Steam settings, or using 3rd party app to limit speeds on Steam, if you need bandwidth on your device for something.

Please note, when updates happens your download can be reset when you resume download, it's ideal to finishes download asap if the game updates as often, this is commonly known for games with early access, and newly released games.

See, that's what I am doing, and it doesn't work. I pause the update/download, select "Steam" from the menu and click "exit".

Then I reboot the computer by selecting "power>:restart" from Windows desktop.

To me "forcing shutdown" would be just unplug the machine while it's actively doing something. I never do that :)

When Steam starts again, it starts downloading the update from 0%.

I don't think anything can change my bandwidth. Every app that downloads, does so at 6.8 mps, my ISP is AT&T (and I make sure no other apps are downloading).

You still haven't told us WHY you keep rebooting.

So you have bad plan speeds from ISP, not much anyone can help you with, all you can do is do like I said limit speed download, so can regain your bandwidth to do what you wanted, then undo the limit when done what you needed to do, and let the game finish downloading without pausing, or shutting down Steam.

Updating Windows requires a reboot.

It won't update until you close everything, then restart, while it's reloading it installs the update. It has to be the first thing you're computer is actually doing, you can't just update it any time, you have to do it the way they tell you too :)
Pscht 15 NOV 2023 a las 10:09
How often do you get updates? Shouldn't be more than once a month
xarvn 15 NOV 2023 a las 10:58
Windows Update has an option "Pause updates for 7 days" that you can set. Surely the game update should not take more than 168 hours?
