Code redeemed on wrong account
Someone I know accidentally used their code to redeem a game on my account when it was meant for theirs, I haven't used the game as I need it removed from my account and I'd like to know if there's any way to "unredeem" or revoke access to it in some way.

I previously contacted support about this issue but all they explained was that certain things (CD Keys being one of the mentioned items) are non-transferable and can't be reset or moved between accounts. The thing is I'm not looking to relocate or transfer anything I'm simply trying to see if there's any way to basically return it considering it's just gonna be collecting dust in my steam library with 0 hours played.

I know games can be refunded if unplayed so I wanted to know if something similar can be done for something that was obtained from a CD Key.

EDIT: Thanks for putting this issue to bed everyone, personally even I felt there was no turning back after using the code, but they insisted I try to fix this.

All I can do now is just be vigilant and make sure this doesn't happen again, live and learn I suppose.

Steam can not refund anything you did not buy from Steam.

Your friend would need to take it up with the store, but i can pretty much guarantee that a redeemed product is exluded from refunds.

How is this even possible unless youre account sharing...

The code (key) was not purchased on Steam, therefore it is not refundable.

Secondly codes (keys) are one time use and are attached to the account they were activated on and why Steam Support told you they cannot transfer it.

If it was obtained from a CD key nope, there is no return policy for physical games when opened.

If it was a license key from a site you can ask that site, refund rules will vary, but nothing steam can do

The only option is that the other account family shares their library and the game back to you.

Account sharing is against the TOS. Your lucky you only lost a game and not your account. Get your friend to get his own steam account. IT does not cost much and there are very affordable games, otherwise you may end up with your steam account being banned permanently for breaking the TOS.

Here is terms of services:

https://store.steampowered.com/subscriber_agreement/

"C. Your Account

When you complete Steam’s registration process, you create a Steam account ("Account"). Your Account may also include billing information you provide to Valve for transactions concerning Subscriptions, Content and Services and the purchase of any physical goods through Steam (“Hardware”). You may not reveal, share or otherwise allow others to use your password or Account except as otherwise specifically authorized by Valve. You are responsible for the confidentiality of your login and password and for the security of your computer system. Valve is not responsible for the use of your password and Account or for all of the communication and activity on Steam that results from use of your login name and password by you, or by any person to whom you may have intentionally or by negligence disclosed your login and/or password in violation of this confidentiality provision. Unless it results from Valve’s negligence or fault, Valve is not responsible for the use of your Account by a person who fraudulently used your login and password without your permission. If you believe that the confidentiality of your login and/or password may have been compromised, you must notify Valve via the support form (https://support.steampowered.com/newticket.php) without any delay.

Your Account, including any information pertaining to it (e.g.: contact information, billing information, Account history and Subscriptions, etc.), is strictly personal. You may therefore not sell or charge others for the right to use your Account, or otherwise transfer your Account, nor may you sell, charge others for the right to use, or transfer any Subscriptions other than if and as expressly permitted by this Agreement (including any Subscription Terms or Rules of Use) or as otherwise specifically permitted by Valve."

The whole reason this rule is in effect is to prevent people doing exactly what you posted OP. It is your own fault for breaking the TOS. As i said, get your friend their own steam account.

Like I said in my last response:

Same PC, different accounts. They have their own account but they didn't realize I was signed in until it was too late.

Same response, steam won't do anything. You can contact the site you bought it from and see what they say, thats it.

If the retailer is a legitimate, authorized site then contact their support. Legitimate stores can revoke keys even after they are redeemed.

If you purchased from an illegitimate site like one whose names turn to hearts when you post in the forums, then you are out of luck.

Sites can't revoke the keys - they merely handle them and that's it. The publisher is the one that does this their end and it has to be for a significant reason provided (i.e fraudulent purchase) by the retailer. For their own protection, it is unlikely they'll remove and distribute a new key else people would play the game and then pretend it was on the wrong account in a bid to have it given to someone else. I'm not sure retailers would even want to get involved or raise it further as their job is done so the OP would have to go direct to the publisher to stand any chance.
