steam will stop to work on windows 8.1 in 0 days
I find that it is absolutly unbelievable to force people to use windows 10 and upper.

In particular while Most of the actual steam libary is filled with small games that could even work on windows XP and 1Ghz computer.

Also most of the steam library includes games from 2014 and older: it doesnt make any sense to buy old games and then block their use on old computers.

Thats really sad and disapointing,

I hope that valve will change their mind and add full compatibility and retrocompatibility.

Is there a way to stop steam from upgrades?

thx for the answers however i cannot say they do answer my question since we will get only very limited options.

The only answer to the solution can be the complete and absolute cancel of this update and full support and retrocompatibility with every windows OS.

thou art an entitled git.. and thou needest to grow up. you don't always get what you want. and a company doesn't need to cater to you..

this would be like walmart closing a store in your area because it quit being profitable due to rampant crime.. you can't sue walmart themselves for closing that store. maybe you need to move to a better neighborhood

Well you can sure dream. None of that will happen even remotely and from all experiences with disliked updates in the past, Steam will just flatly ignore all complaints.
As they should honestly.

That section in the Steam Subscriber agreement about arbitration that nobody reads is probably worth reading now. There are other options than pure lawsuiting.

i'm with davidb11 on that ... NO that is unreasonable
having a proper legacy option to continue playing offline what you have on this system until it breaks or you change system is reasonable and should be in place

demanding steam nerver updates is crazy talk

this was expected at some point ... mid year in mid recession not the best time
but at some point it was going to happen

and yes at some point your pc will break or you will just want a new one

until such time offline legacy should run on your system it's the reasonable demand
and the fact it's not the steam plan is the issue

My physical collection of games will last more than Steam, dont worry.

Acting like customers are proper ♥♥♥♥♥ wont lead them far

Why are you making up baseless accusations now?
It makes no sense.

Literally no one is actually this upset. LOL.
You must be doing this for a laugh.
I'm running W10 on a frikkkin' toaster... a 15 YO Notebook with 4 GB (HP dv4t-1300, Core2Duo T6600, upgraded from 3GB, started life with Vista).

Runs Steam just fine and plays any game within the hardware reqs... which, granted, isn't a lot.

Can it run Crysis?! :P
Jokes aside, other than the original Doom, what can that run?

Just about anything prior to 2012 and doesn't require a dedicated graphics card. As I said, not a lot but that is a limitation by hardware, not the OS. It will start a lot of other games, allowing me to farm cards, but that is limited as well. By hardware...

Ah. Fair enough.
I have an ancient laptop around here somewhere, I think.
I haven't tried turning it on, but it is probably close to 20 years old.
I think it has Windows XP on it.

Honestly I should try to get window 10 running on my old Dell netbook for giggles

There is a solution: You can tell the steam client not to update anymore. It will not download a newer steam client version. And you can use the current one. At some point some features may not work anymore.

But you still will be able to start your games online or offline.
Some people with XP use this since they had the same problem:

All you need is to create the following file in your Steam folder:

Steam.cfg
and put inside the following: BootStrapperInhibitAll=Enable

Is that the only way to stop the updates?

It would be great that Steam adds an user friendly option to stop the updates within the launcher tbh

all the companies do that

or you can just get your OS updated and not have any issues

No, "all the companies" don't' do that. There are many that dropped OS support previously and will in the future, and still require one to update.

Also, it looks like Valve's clarification on the matter wasn't posted here yet, so I'll add it.

Keep in mind that support is being dropped for Windows 7.8.8.1, but the client will still run on Windows 7, it just isn't guaranteed to do so and will not be fixed if an eventual update breaks it.

https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/4784-4F2B-1321-800A
Windows 7 and Windows 8 Support

As of January 1 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. After that date, existing Steam Client installations on these operating systems will no longer receive updates of any kind including security updates. Steam Support will be unable to offer users technical support for issues related to the old operating systems, and Steam will be unable to guarantee continued functionality of Steam on the unsupported operating system versions.

In order to ensure continued operation of Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users should update to a more recent version of Windows. We expect the Steam client and games on these older operating systems to continue running for some time without updates after January 1st, 2024, but we are unable to guarantee continued functionality after that date.

This change is required as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above.

We strongly encourage all Windows 7/8/8.1 users to update sooner rather than later. Microsoft ended security updates and technical support for Windows 7 in January 2020 and for Windows 8.1 in January 2023. Computers running these operating systems, when connected to the internet, are susceptible to new malware and other exploits which will not be patched. That malware can cause your PC, Steam and games to perform poorly or crash. That malware can also be used to steal the credentials for your Steam account or other services.

Then buy games from "all the companies".
I find it funny that people complain of hackers and stuff but they do not mitigate upgrades/updates.
