Disk write error
Hi all,

The steam “disk write error” has been affecting my D drive for a while now. It’s working fine on my C drive, but there isn’t enough storage on it for my games. I’ve tried almost everything that has been suggested to me. So far I’ve tried;
-Clearing cache
-Changing download region
-Launching steam as admin
-Verifying game file integrity
-Turning off read-only settings (messing with file privileges)
-Uninstalling and reinstalling drivers
-Repairing the library through Steam’s storage settings

Some posts suggested that the issue might be connected to the system32 file IgfxEM.exe, but I haven’t been able to find that file in Task Manager or the system32 directory.

Both Windows 10 and my Nvidia drivers are up to date and I believe my SSD is fine, although I’m not sure how to know for sure. The problem extends to the epic game launcher as well (cannot install/uninstall anything). Could it be a problem with the installation of my graphics card? I have not tried moving it to another slot yet. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hmm, since you said that the error occurs in both, steam and epic I would assume that the problems lies somewhere in your software or hardware. Try installing a game with your antivirus/firewall turned off and see if anything happens. If that doesn't work it would probably be a good idea to check your SSD's health as well. I would advise to find and download one of the programs that show analytically if and what's wrong with your SSD but if you don't wanna do that you can also check it through CMD:

1. Click the Search button from the Taskbar

2. Type in "CMD" and hit enter

3. Type "WMIC" and hit enter

4. Type "diskdrive get status" and hit enter

If you get OK on all drives they are most likely fine. If you get Pred fail they are malfunctioning.

Also is steam installed in C drive and has an extra folder on D? By "working fine" do you mean that you have tried installing a game in your C drive and it worked?

What does CrystalDiskInfo[crystalmark.info] say about the D drive?

The disk, especially the directory where it writes files to, need to have full user and admin permissions. You need to set the read and write access permission on the D: disk properly if it was used in another computer at first. If this is the first time using the disk, then it should automatically be set properly.

The second thing you need to note is ensure the USB connection to this disk is not interrupted by power saving mode settings
-->Go to device manager
--Under Universal Serial Bus controllers
----> Double-click on the "USB Root Hub device".
-->Go to Power Management
--> uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

and:
-->Go to Power Management
-->Select the High Performance power profile and use that instead. (otherwise change usb power settings in the Power Management profile of your choice)

Third, you need to have the disk connected before Steam is launched.

If that all doesn't work, run chkdsk on the disk to fix file system issues and try fixing the Steam Games library on the disk.
