Downloading 86%......
So I experiencing a bizarre bug, no idea how it happened, whats going on or how to 'fix' it.

What is the bug:
A game will stop downloaded (it think at this point its ting to put it on disk) and get stuck at %86
For me I've experienced this 4 time total 3 times in the past to weeks

What is affected:
mostly all things Steam related: if your playing a game the game will be nearly unplayable, stopping the download basically doesn't respond, closing steam (properly) isn't possible (unless you have maybe 18 hours? to wait for it)

How to 'fix' it:
-restart PC
-launch steam
(the rest you have to do kinda fast)
-get to downloads
-hope you have another download in the que (as mentioned before stopping doesn't always work for some reason)
-move up another game to the active downloads (smaller size is more likely to work)
-once/if the 'bad' game is out of the active download, remove it from the que

so to 'fix' it you can't really play that game until... a real solution is found?

An extra thing to add, one of the times I waited for this to see if it would get resolved I got to see this message which I don't think I've ever seen this before:
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/174515012528898048/1147296393388630016/image.png

So from what I can gather at this point is isn't actually 'downloading' its installing, Removing the downloading folder doesn't do much, it just mean it has to redownload the files that haven't been installed yet

I thought I was the only one getting this, but I was talking about this with my friends and one of them said they got this to, also stuck at 86%. So that prompted me to make this post, to see what anyone knows about this.

There's a few things that can cause this.

Dodgy hard drive, too much space used on your hard drive or Steam corruption being the most common.

A lot of people don't get how Steam works. Valve recommend you don't use more than about 90% of your install hard drive(s). Because it needs to sort and move data around because of how downloads work here.

So if you do go over it can cause issues like this or slow down drastically. If this is the case, you need to make some space to get it under that 90% threshold.

Of course, if your hard drive is acting up you can get this too.

But if it's some sort of Steam corruption which often happens there's a number of things you can try.

First off clear your download cache under Steam settings and restart. Also clear your web cache while you're at it.

If the problem still persists you can always try the general fix all - go to your Steam install folder and delete EVERYTHING EXCEPT the steamapps folder (where your games reside) and steam.exe.

Then run steam.exe and it will reacquire all the needed files.

If things still don't get any better then it's time to start doing some intensive tests on your drive. Crystal Mark (or whatever it's called now) is a good bet.

I was unaware of the 90% limit, thanks for all the information, I'll have to look over everything and comeback to see what works.

No problem. Steam does things a little different and it can throw a lot of people off.

By all means try these things step by step and if it still causes issues get back to us.

so I'm back the next day, and I'm still having issues, in fact the number of failed downloads (also games I can't play) has gone up from 4 to 6...

I've cleared the "Download Cache", I was unaware that this would additionally reset nearly all your settings to default, and log you out. (that was frustrating....)
I've also cleared over 500GB of space

and I'm not sure what to do at this point

Only antivirus app seem to the only one thing left that can stop a file same spot or disk itself, or try dl to other disk , and hpoe its not a disk write issue problem.

make sure you dont have qurrantine issue witha file.

require whitelist of steam.exe or exception rules for steam.

The following paragraph is my thought on anti virus, you may skip this paragraph if you wish
I only have 1 "anti Virus" program at this rate, I use 'air' quotes for 2 reasons. First the majority of the anti virus industry has gotten rather sus. They usually do something in addition to being anti virus, and when they are being antivirus issues like this happen, which is why they made 'quarantine'. There should be a need for quarantine, find the file the are bad and the user CLEARLY isn't using. Secondly the program I use I would really consider it a anti virus program as it act more like a sniffer. Instead of removing files without the users input or consent, it simply alerts you that there is a bad file and where to find it, so that you may take action yourself. Its more work but its worth it.

Moving one, I don't have a program capable of affecting other files in the same way a traditional anti virus would. As for the Disk, there was a issue with it when I tried to back it up once. It seems that could be the case...

Question is, you've cleared 500GB of space but does that take it below that 90% threshold?

Have you tested the hardrive using testing software?
