Steam does not save (rewind) game time
Hi people.

I've been running into the same problem over and over again. I play some kind of game, open the in-game overlay, and see there that I have been playing this game, for example, for 23 hours. In Steam itself it says that I played for 23 hours. I close the game and in front of my eyes the time decreases to 20 hours.

Why is this happening?

I have a guess. Due to the internet connection dropping during the game. This may be as a result of restarting the router, problems with the Internet at the provider, or enabling / disabling VPN on the computer. And it doesn't matter if you play online or single player. At this moment, the time of the current game session is reset in the game overlay. Now it does not matter how many hours you will be in the game after that, it will be reset as soon as you close the game. The countdown of the game time stopped at the moment when the steam client lost its connection to the Internet, even if it lasted only a second. At such moments, I can communicate with a friend via voice communication in discord and play a network game, and I won’t even notice a break in communication, but this is critical for Steam.

Because of this error in a couple of games, I had an incident. The time spent in the game for the last week was more than the total time spent in the game. How so?

I wrote to technical support more than once, sent them screenshots and even tried to send videos (links to videos). But the result is the same, "there is nothing we can do and we will not say if we will fix it." And we do not open links to third-party sites, for example, Google drive where I uploaded the video to show them.

Am I the only one who faced this problem since they don't care so much about it?

Game time has always been notoriously off.

Sometimes it saves correctly, others not. It can also be affected by if your internet connection drops out too.

Sorry but there's nothing you can do about this, as it's not really important anyway.

It's important for me. When you have 8 hours of gameplay cut off at a time, it's not very cool.

And how then is the offline time saved when there is no Internet at all? Or is it not saved at all?

As I said it doesn't work properly. It CAN be affected by the internet being out is all.

The fact remains, like it or not, you can't fix it after the fact.
