Steam Games Crashing GPU on New Windows 10 PC
Hey folks, I just bought a new HP Envy 750, upgraded to Windows 10, updated every conceivable driver, restarted the computer, let the HP assistant update everything, etc. But my Steam games (XCOM 2, Wasteland 2, CSGO) all crash after only a few minutes of gameplay. I have verified the integrity of all the games and they all crash. My monitor loses signal and my audio cuts out soon afterwards. I have to power off my computer, and power it back on each time. I'm using an HDMI cable connected to an Acer monitor. So far I've not had this problem with Battle.net games.

Here are my specs:
Intel i7-4790k CPU 4.00 GHz quad 4
16 gb ram
64-bit OS
Nvidia GeForce GTX 970

I've tried absolutely everything I can think of, but HP's support site stinks and I am unable to find any other fixes. Has anyone else experienced something similar or found a solution to the problem?

According to the drop menu here....

It only supports Windows 7. So where did you get the drivers, please ?

I used the HP Support Assistant, then used the driver update in the device manager. After the device manager didn't detect any newer drivers, I downloaded Nvidia GeForce Experience and updated the drivers through that.

You used Nvidia Exp. to update the GPU drivers, yes, but can you not see that the manufacturer does not have supported system/other hardware drivers for Windows 10 on that computer from the page I have linked above ?

Use the drop menu. The only OS I see is Windows 7, that is of course if I have the right computer in the search and pretty sure , it is correct with what you posted.

Does that mean the drivers aren't developed yet or that the hardware is not compatible with Windows 10?

Windows may have generic or basic drivers, yes, but obviously if you cannot get them from the actual manufacturer of the hardware in a fully updated and optimised version, that can be a problem.

I never let Windows update my drivers for any reason, especially this reason right here that you have.

EDIT..Correction...that you "seem" to have.

I mean, who do you trust more ? Microsoft that is basically cramming this upgrade down everyone's throat, even with a KB update that harrasses you into doing the upgrade...

OR

The actual and official manufacturer of the computer, in this case HP ?

EDIT..And this does not even cover the possible BIOS issue that can come up when you change the OS on a computer, especally if not officially supported on that computer.

I have reverted to Windows 7, updated all drivers through the HP update system, updated all graphics drivers, reinstalled the games, and am still getting the exact same problem. CSGO crashes approximately 10 minutes after launch without fail.

If you are getting into the game menu or intro video fine as you seem to be here (10 minutes into the game then crash) and having a problem with the game, normally you should get help in the game forum, as the issue seems to be about the game now and not Steam. Just in case, do this exactly as suggested for the game....

I think it is a Steam-specific issue, since XCOM, CSGO, and Wasteland all respond the same way. There was an old thread about a memory leak from the Steam store, but that did not fix the issue. I did verify the files, no change.

Then we can continue to try to help you here I guess. I was just passing that on in case you could get help in the game's forum.

So at this point, I would request that you post a screenshot of your installed programs from control panel then system and "programs and features", for example. You can use imgur.com to upload it and post the link here. We need to see if something on your computer may be affecting the game.

Also, did you do the file verification EXACTLY as said on that page ? Why I ask is because I have seen a case or two where the user did not run as admin on the relevant OS and that actually fixed the issue after they did it again properly.

I tried running Heroes of the Storm, a more graphically intensive Bnet game, and the graphics crashed all the same. I'm thinking this is a GPU/hardware issue. I'm going to try getting in touch with HP support, because this is getting ridiculous. Thanks for you help.

This thread is incredibly long winded for what's probably a video card issue. If the computer is brand new and the monitor isn't receiving a signal after games have been running a few minutes then the video card is probably faulty. Most likely it's overheating. It's certainly not an Nvidia driver issue and ''Windows 10 compatibile' stamps on manufacturer's websites mean little. Compatibility with computers manufactured over the past two years is extremely good and certainly all the components listed are fully supported.

I know it's a hassle OP but can you contact HP for support and get the computer replaced? Or maybe see if they will replace the video card under warranty?
Can you elaborate on this more, please ? If not here for obvious reasons then my profile is open for comments. What do you mean that if the manufacturer does not support Windows 10 on the computer, that this is not reliable ? What is one supposed to go by then, and where do you get supported drivers if a manufacturer's website does not have them to download ?

In this case for OP, the only drivers available for download on the manufacturer's website are for Windows 7. And this is not even getting into any BIOS issues that may come up. If the manufacturer does not even have downloadable drivers for an OS, they are not necessarily going to have warnings about any BIOS issues that may come up if trying to run that exact OS on the computer in question. There would be no need to mention any BIOS issues anyway, in that example.

I suspect it is a hardware issue, more than likely either the GPU or the power supply, since it runs very well for 5 minutes and then stutters and crashes (only video). I just went 3 rounds with tech support, with the guy trying to convince me it's a problem with my hdmi cable (the same cable that I've used without incident on my Roku for the past year). The same issue happened when I tried a new cable, and that wouldn't even make sense given that it runs well initially before cutting out, and there are no issues when just browsing. Testing it with FPS in Counter Strike I start at 300 fps, then it dips to 60, and then starts falling before completely crashing the video, which is why I think it's a temperature issue, though the computer tower doesn't feel hot.

I monitored the processes to see if the memory was getting used up but it never went above half my ram.

My anti-virus is on that list you posted, but I don't think that's the issue, like I mentioned above the video loses signal, but the audio keeps going. So its not like the anti-virus software is crashing the game or even the internet connection.

Basically, I'm guessing I have to spend another 2 hours on the phone with tech support before they finally admit that it's the GPU which is either a lemon or has a malfunctioning fan.

If you have an antivirus that is listed, then it certainly IS suspect. We see antivirus programs be an issue many times here. And if the AV programs is borking up the game files, then you have to fix the AV issue BEFORE you do this exactly as said here for Windows 7.....
