Windows can not find 'C:\Steam\steam.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and try again
I just recently upgrade my Window from 7 to 10 and reinstall Steam. However, when I try to run Steam.exe I encoter this message: "Windows can not find 'C:\Steam\steam.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and try again"

There are 2 folder in my steam directory. They are 'bin' and 'public'. I also have steam.exe and uninstall.exe. I had tried /install on steamservice.exe but it isn't working. Adding Path variable isn't working either.

Please help.

right-click Steam.exe and choose "Run as Admin". do not do that for subsequent startups.

So lets get this straight. Are you indeed doubleclicking that Steam.exe in the filter where Steam is installed?
P_TuSangLui Apr 18, 2016 @ 10:28am
Yes. Of course.

Download Windows Media Creation Tool, make bootable USB flash
Backup important data and settings
Do clean install - W10 upgrade newer work correctly on laptops:
the only thing that has been achieved M$, since W1.0 release times - save user data and most of the settings - the latter often are the cause of most problems after update + incompatible drivers and the need to re-install all third-party components.

Are you sure you're installing into where you think it is.

It sounds like you have an old folder containing an old steam installation and are clicking a shortcut which no longer exists? There should be more than 2 folders in your Steam directory if it's a proper installation!

Has the new Steam installation gone to a different place and your shortcut needs updating?

I run it from the .exe location itself not from shorcut.

If Karr is correct, then the real Steam installation is probably at c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam.

If OP is comfortable using the registry, the exact location should be indicated by the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam\SteamExe key.

I have looked into the registry and yes the value is still C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam.

Thing is, I have tried reinstall Steam to its default directory yet the problem persist.

On another note, I had installed Avast but later uninstalled it. Do you think it is still possible that Avast causing the problem?

Avast is on the list of problematic software. Did you reboot after uninstalling Avast ?

Check for other software that you may have that is on the list. Check other background processes also.

Have you gone here and expanded the drop menu for Windows 10 64 bit and downloaded and updated all the drivers for Windows 10 64 bit on that computer ??? I see alot of drivers in the list so I suggest you do that and not just simply use Windows update....

Also, when you change the OS on a computer, that sometimes can cause a BIOS issue and the BIOS needs to be updated. I am not saying yours does, but it "may".

The best way to troubleshoot Steam is to boot your PC into safe mode with networking and launch Steam there if you can and log in. If you cannot do that and get errors in safe mode with networking, then you should backup/move your steamapps folder to a safe place and fully uninstall Steam.

After you do that, reboot BACK into safe mode with networking and reinstall Steam using a fresh copy of the client as in taken from here...

http://store.steampowered.com/about/

Once you do THAT, launch Steam WHILE still in safe mode with networking and see that it updates fine and you can log in as normal. I suggest you not boot into normal Windows until you find the original issue, but it was "probably" Avast. You need to make exceptions for Steam in any antivirus program, and that is explained in the antivirus paragraph on the page I linked above concerning programs that may inteferre with Steam.

I did check if there is any Avast process but there is none. I'll double check it again today.

I did boot the computer in Safe mode with internet (F5). Uninstalled Steam and reinstall it. Sadly, it didn't work.

P_TuSangLui Apr 19, 2016 @ 2:06pm
OK.I'm a bit embarassed about this but I fixed it.

At first I found the topic by microsoft about how malware can cause this but I dismissed it since I don't think there would be any malware which just target only steam.

However, after trying many method, I decided to download malwarebyte and scan my computer. Honestly, while I was wating for scanning to be completed, I chuckled and thought "This ain't gonna work"

It found this malware: 'HackTool.Komodia'

And after remove it, my steam work.

Please accept my apologize for causing all of you inconveniences. I really appreciate all of your help. Thank you very much.
