non-steam multiplayer games and steam friends?

I know you can import some non-steam games into steam for easier acessibility, though they do have restrictions. I was wondering if it's possible to play multiplayer games with steam friends if you didn't get your copy of the game from steam? ie, you get a pc disk copy from the store, and your freinds have it for steam. Would you still be able to play with them, or would being a non-steam game prevent you from doing so?

It will work except in some very specific cases.

It's INCREDIBLY rare for the place of purchase to determine who you can and can't play with.

Games mostly all use the same set of servers regardless of where you purchased it. If you buy Battlefield Bad Company from here, you will play on EA servers, with the people who bought it from Steam, EA, uPlay or in a shop.

There are some rare exceptions, but i can't think of any off the top of my head from the mainstream games.

Titan Quest Steam version is being actively developed, the disc version won't receive any updates anymore.
