Games Won't Launch - Bad Image Error C:/Windows/system32/d3dx9_43.dll
I'm on a brand new laptop, have downloaded several games, and many of them simply will not launch.

When I click 'Play', it appears to launch the game, says 'Running' next to the game in my Library, and that lasts 1-2 seconds. Then nothing happens and the game never launches.

I only have 5 games installed so far:
Doesn't Launch - This War of Mine
Doesn't Launch - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD
Doesn't Launch - Need for Speed Hot Pursuit
Works Fine - Banished
Works Fine - Gnomoria

My laptop is running Windows 10 64-bit and has Intel HD 520 graphics. Not that impressive but I'm not trying to run Witcher III or something, just stuff with simpler graphics.

I've tried a number of fixes I found in Steam forums but none of them have worked. My drivers and Direct X are up to date as far as I can tell.

If I go directly to the .exe of any of the games and try to run them, I get a 'Bad Image' error. It points to C:/Windows/system32/d3dx9_43.dll saying that file is 'either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error." Try reinstalling blah blah blah.

Any thoughts? I appreciate your help.

This is an annoying issue, luckily the following has helped a lot of people out.
It is possible that your d3dx9_43.dll could be missing. Navigate to My Computer, Local Disc C:/, then Windows, and look for d3dx9_43.dll. If you don't you will have to download the dll or reinstall DirectX.

It is also possible that same file isn't in the game folders. Navigate to your Steam folder in C:/Program Files/Steam/Steamapps/Common. Go into the game's folder, then Binaries, and look for that d3dx9_43.dll. If it is not there, copy and paste it into the folder. The issue should be resolved hopefully.
Hey really sorry for necro-ing here but currently going thru the same issue and this is the only post i could find with info on this. I went thru the first part and found the d3dx9_43.dll but when i went to the game i couldn't find the d3dx9_43.dll. I tried searching for a binaries folder but i can't find it. Is that the folder name or am i crazy? The game is warframe
Edit: my error also seems to be slight different, it seems to be XAPOFX1_5.ddl that it is erroring

Yo I'm having the same issue. The only difference is that I'm trying to run Witcher 3. I'm on windows 10 pro version 1709
Verify the game files, just in case, first.

Go to the game's folder and reinstall any and all redist packages manually, directly from the folder of the game.

Reinstall the latest DirectX.

If the error continues, something may be affecting the first time setup of the game, as in conflicting software running in the background, for example. Therefore, Steam could not install these packages, perhaps, during that first time setup.

So, fixing that conflict first would be the right course of action, if there is a conflict.
