Messed Up Steam
Okay, so I did something to Steam the other day. I don't know what, but I tried to delete a file from my computer and accidentally ended up getting one of the Steam files as well. So now, Steam won't even open. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it, but it said that I need to close Steam before installing it. So I went into the file explorer and typed in Steam. There were still some Steam files. So I tried deleting them, but the same message keeps popping up that they can't be deleted due to something about the "steam client bootstrapper". I don't know what that means, but if somebody has anything that might help, I greatly appreciate it.

What is your antivirus program ?

Do you still have the Steam.exe file in your Steam folder ?

Hey,

Please completely exit Steam (open your task manager and make sure no Steam client processes are running) and then follow the instructions mentioned in this article: Refresh Your Steam Files.

I don't know anything about an antivirus program and the only thing remaining is a handful of .dll files, logs and the Steam application.

You don't know what antivirus program you use ? I suggest that you find that out, please.

Can you try what the good Max suggested above ? Is Steam currently not running ? If it is, then try killing the process with task manager as he suggested and then do the refresh.

Okay, I tried following those steps and I just restarted my computer and launched Steam and it says "Downloading update (23,548 of 130,972 KB)..."

Sounds as if Steam is updating then. Please find out what antivirus program you use if you can.

Also, I highly suggest that at least until we get you sorted out here, you go into your settings in Steam as soon as you are able and set Steam to not run on startup of your computer.

Go to "Steam" in the top left of the client, then "settings" and then "interface". The first box should be not checked so Steam will not run on boot of your computer.

That is again, as soon as you are able to launch Steam and get to that setting.

Let it update and see where we stand then.
