Ban from gifts
So I read something on Reddit about possibly being trade/account banned for accepting game gifts from strangers.

How exactly does this work?

I got a random game gift once, accepted it and the guys friend req. He said he was just "giving back", he's still on my friends list.

I know how accepting key gifts is dangerous but I thought game gifts were for the most part secure?

And I read something on Reddit that said Bigfoot is kidnapping old people in Yosemite.

Point is, people say a lot of things. Doesn't make it true. Unless you're accepting so many random gifts that you look like a scammer's alt, nothing will happen.

Its a new form of scam, the scamer give you a code froma retail game, once you activate the game ther scamer go to support and reclaim the acount as stolen then he provides the card with the serial number on it,the support thinks is leggit and give the acount to him, once on the stolen acoun he can trade or sell the items, once you reclaim the acount can be a bit later, never acept gifts in serials from strange prople, specialy if is too good.

Also gifts purchased through fraudulent means can affect your account. Support has no way of knowing whether you're an innocent bystander or part of e.g. the credit card fraud. Also selling game gifts is against the ToS, if you receive them on a regular basis, it looks a lot like you're buying them somewhere else.

Please correct me on that but wasnt the standard procedure being that the worst thing to happen is that the game gets revoked and thats it?

Im fairly confident that they ask more proofs than that *knocks on wood*

Otherwise we would see tons and tons of ppl hijacked by activating keydrops from forums and such.

If your account is associated with fraud, it will be investigated and one of three things happens:
- Nothing and the game just gets revoked (and your account probably getting flagged for the future still)
- you receive a warning and your account gets restricted until the issue is resolved with support, similar to issuing a chargeback
- the account is closed right away

At least that's what I have taken from the various forum posts.

Why would a Steam account be suspended?

lesson to learn here, accept only gift from trusty friends and family :) if you are not careful it can cost you your steam account and you would have to create a new one.

Should I remove the game from my account? Or would the suspension have already happened by now? (I got the gift about a month ago)

how will you remove the game from your account?

iirc theres an option to no longer associate a game with your account. Dunno if that's only for f2p games but I hope it works for p2p games too..

i believe it is only for f2p to be honest. i never saw an option on paid games to remove them completly from my account (even tho i think that would be meaningless since i paid for them in the first place)

Well ♥♥♥♥ me.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You can remove paid for games as well, but the key stays associated with your account anyway, so, personally, I wouldn't bother. Chargebacks can be issued up to and above 6 months after the transaction, which means it can still be in the air.

Play it now before you might lose it, fell lucky and be more aware of the dangers next time.
