Blank Black Steam after Attempting to Purchase Games
Whenever I click 'purchase game for myself' and 'purchase game as a gift' its giving me a big black blank screen of death in the Steam client. Is this something new when purchasing new games? Is this part of the bugs we've been having with the Win10 Anni update?

It's a bug we've had since July 29th, and has even affected Mac users.

That being said, one of my friends has this issue on Windows 10; while I don't.

If it's only the secure pages (https) that refuse to load, might want test if it's any different should you do this: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8043-EUJN-5239

You can test for example by clicking [More > Offer a Trade] on your friend's profile. That should load up a https:// -page.

Anyway, your cart should work on your web-browser.

Well, given you want to give me any insight, if and when you care, could you try that Selective Startup?

Should the issue not persist, try enabling the programs in batches and see where the issue starts. If the issue does persist, then just return to normal boot.

Sry Teutep, I didn't mean to sound sarcastic to you. I did appreciate your help and thanks so much for your suggestions. I'm sorry if I said anything wrong.

Erm, no harm done?

I didn't mean my post in a negative way either.

I'm just curious to find out why it happens to some people; but not to me. Whether that be a program with which the beta client was interfering with, or some setting one could flip.

I have the same exact problem as OP. I use Windows 7.

I can purchase games in my web browser just fine, though I'd prefer to use the desktop client. Even without the preference, it'd be good to know what's wrong anyway.

I've been in touch with Support. They've told me to
  • Restart; duh, first thing I tried, didn't work
  • Make sure I had no proxy or VPN interference; I have no such things active when purchasing, so no problem there.
  • Flushing config; did that, did not work

They then directed me to the Troubleshooting Network Connectivity page. Most of it is irrelevant, but I did check my firewall, AV and such to see if Steam had somehow become blocked. It didn't appear to be. I turned off both my AV and Firewall and got the same results.

I've looked over that Disabling Background Applications page posted in Teutep's first reply and nothing else on there appears to apply to my situation.

It may be related to HTTPS, as when I've tried to open up a trade on a friend's profile, as Teutep has suggested their first reply, I get another black screen. What do I do next? Bypassing HTTPS for purchasing sounds like a bad idea. What's causing HTTPS to act like this in the desktop client?

So I've hit a dead end here. At least I can purchase through my browser, but again, it'd be convenient to be able to use the desktop client like I have been for years.

Try this...

Follow the steps here exactly, in order, from top to bottom.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I did exactly as instructed from top to bottom, but unfortunately the problem persists.

I see you said you turned off your antivirus, but that is not the last step from the support page linked below, if you have one that is listed there. Some don't get along with Steam sometimes, so the final step is sometimes needed depending on what you have maybe. Keep reading this, please.

Sorry that did not help. Only other thing I can think of is to troubleshoot this using safe mode with networking. Boot your computer into safe mode with networking and try to use the Steam client there and see if the issue persists.

If it does not and you see improvement in that safe boot , stay in that boot and look over this list from top to bottom, as a first step of course.

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9828-SFLZ-9289

NOTE..Be sure you have networking enabled in the safe boot options menu before you boot into safe mode.

EDIT..Are you using the beta ? If you are, opt out and restart Steam and try again.

EDIT 2 Thank to you for your kind words also, ĦØⱢỊϾ Șῌ⊙₮. We really appreciate the time you gave to post your exact fix and in a step-by-step set of instructions also. Good luck to you always.

Fixed! I opted out of Steam beta. A recent update must have messed with my compatibility somewhere.

I tried a few other things before that, none of which worked. In case anyone is seeking help or info, I'll post them here anyway:
  • Booted into safe mode with networking. No change.
  • A friend shot in the dark and thought maybe my ISP's DNS could be messed up. I switched to a Google DNS, logged into Steam, tried to purchase again and the screen was still black/blank.
  • I also started up a game, opened Steam's in-game overlay, and opened the web browser in there. It works without issue, HTTPS and all. However, a curious message appeared at the top when it was opened saying that my Chrome is out of date.
  • Checked for a Steam update, but I do that every login manually and my client is up to date.

Thank you, The Giving One! Your patience, charity and overall demeanor and help are greatly appreciated. I wish there were more people out there like you. Teutep and OP, thank you both for your posts.

I'll opt back in to Steam beta after a week or two to see if the problem persist or if an update fixes that.

Again, my fix was opting out of Steam beta. A recent update may be the culprit.

Disabling the DirectWrite option actually helps. At least it helped me and now I'm able to purchase games in the client =)

The DirectWrite option is in the interface settings.

Hope it will help you guys, too.
