I think you can fix this and maybe your drive is ok. This is only my assumption right now and I am not sure so if you do somehow get into the drive at some point, I highly suggest that you follow the advice of others here and back up important data just in case the drive is failing. Please post back with what you find out about this and if you need more help.
Update the Drivers also. Update ALL of the drivers, chipset first, and then the rest. Apparently, you do this using Synapse or manually downloading them such as how I linked it before if that is the correct computer, so update Synapse also if needed then check for driver updates using it.
EDIT..Honestly, this is more related to the hardware and OS forum here and not Steam, in my opinion that is. Here is the link...

You are misunderstanding me here. I am not taking about updating a drive. I am talking about updating DRIVERS....Drivers with an "rs" on the end.

And by the way, it is not recommended to install Steam (games at all really) on external drives for just this reason, perhaps.

Important:
(snip)
It is not recommended that you install Steam to an external hard drive, due to potential performance issues.
No, you are not stupid or showing stupidity here, it is just inexperience and we all had it at some point. I hope I did not seem rude to you but was just making sure I was clear. That Razer page I linked to you before had a bunch of files that you can download. Those are drivers. You should always make sure your drivers are fully up to date. Since this is an external drive, and since there is a special guide on that site about Windows 10 being on your computer, that is what makes me think you can fix this and the drive is ok.
Again, I could be wrong but still, you need to always make sure drivers are fully up to date, and especially when you buy a computer new if that is what you did. Often, the computer has sat around on a shelf somewhere and new device drivers have been developed since then and the time you got it.
I can suggest the hardware and OS forum about this really. It does not seem to be Steam related to me, but hardware and OS related. You can post a thread there and link this thread for referrence if you want. And you can ask the users in that forum for hardware and OS (drivers) help. Just trying to give you the best advice I can as I want to see you fix this and hopefully it is not a failing hard drive.

I'm downloading the new update for 10 right now and hopefully that fixes the problem
I am wondering if it is drive size (drives 1 TB and over) that is the issue maybe and as you said, needs an update for Windows 10 to solve.
Sorry if I missed it, but is this connected to your computer with eSATA cable (external SATA) OR is it connected by USB, most likely ?
Did you read the guide on Windows 10 for your computer that I suggested for you to read ? There may be some good info in that..
I would still recommend the hardware and OS forum for you. Maybe it will get moved if the mods feel it should be, or, we can continue here as long as no one minds it being in this forum.
