Restoring steam backup, help!
So, before formatting my PC, being a noob, I copied Dota 2's folder from the steamapps/common directory. Just that game's folder, nothing else. Now, I've reinstalled steam and wanted to get that game going on again. Any idea what should I do to make it work again ? Should I copy it back to the steamapps/common folder ? I never copied it's manifest file though :\ Please help me out someone..

NO. The entire steamapps folder is the key. There are files in that folder that you need. Otherwise, you have to redownload your games again.

Not just the common folder, and not only game folders. The entire steamapps folder.

Where is that folder now ? Did you format with that folder on the old installation ?

Ah, ♥♥♥♥♥. I just copied the commons folder before initiating the format, at the moment, that common folder is merged with the steam's. Didn't do anything beyond it thinking that I'd mess up.

If you don't have the .acf files that were in the steamapps folder, then you have to redownload your games again.

2. Move the Steamapps folder out of C:\Program Files\Steam to keep game installations

EDIT..But depending on the game, you "may" have your saved progress there still in the game folder for some games.

You are welcome. Like I said, depending on the game, you "may" search each game folder within the common folder that you backed up, if I have understood you right here so far.

Depending on the game, your saves may still be there at at least so all may not be lost. I would rather have to download the games again than have my saves gone so maybe there is that positive note.

Good luck to you and next time you need help and you are not sure, please feel free to ask the community here in the forums for help before you take action.

So, I just placed the game folder in the steamapps/common and clicked the install button via steam. A popup came up where it said "Discovering the existing game files..." and in a minute or two the whole game was installed without any download :D
