Steam eats disk space everytime I start a download
Hi !

I freed around 20GB before downloading the new Dreamfall Chapters update (which is 6GB) .. the moment the download started, my disk had only 1GB free !

I tried a Steam Cleaner, but it only deleted 500MB. Also in the Steamapps/downloading folder, the Dreamfall game foldee is only 1.4GB !

Does steam reserve all this space before downloading anything or something ?

Thanks

How full is your drive where Steam is installing the game and what is the total size of the drive ?

Drives need extra room for unpacking files and disk operations, so if your drive is almost full, that is not good. Drives need extra headroom for caching and whatnot and that means plenty of free space left on the drive.

Thanks, that makes sense. I hope steam tells us exactly how much disk space it wants before reserving on its own.

Your virtual memory space will readjust according to how low your Disk Space gets. Usually in a spacious HDD, virtual memory for page filing will be pretty high, which takes up gigs of your HDD space. When your disk space gets too low, page filing size automatically becomes smaller to give you more room on your HDD. You usually dont notice this, but then when you free up your filled up HDD, your page filing size again becomes large and takes up that extra HDD space that you just freed up. So when you free up HDD space for a new game, you may automatically lose a lot of space due to page filing readjustment
