HOW TO PORT FORWARD?
Hamachi for what ever reason stopped working for me and my friend so now I want to try to port forward. So I looked up a video on YouTube. I did the run cmd and got the IPv4 address, etc. But when I got to the step where I type it in to the web address box, it takes me to google search results! What am I doing wrong!? WHY IS IT SO ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ HARD TO GET MY FRIENDS TO JOIN MY GAME!?!?!?!?

It's not the "IPv4 Address" that you should type to access your router, it is the "Default Gateway" ip.

I figured that out. Now I'm on Netgear Genie and it is looking for an internal IP address. I tried a bunch of different IPs and it keeps saying: ip address must be a lan address

I don't know what Netgear Genie is, but it's usually really simple to forward ports, what is your router model? did you access it?

Yes It's WNDR3700v3

I need to know what to put in the local IP adress field. And it says it needs to be a LAN IP.

did you try your IPv4 Address?
Videogameking 28 AGO 2014 a las 18:51
Yes and that didn't work either. It let me set it up via port triggering. I'm going to try that. I hope it's the same and kinda works. I just hope it means my friend can join.

Port triggering is not the same thing, the ip you should put is the ipv4 showing in your ipconfig, and the port for gmod or other source games should be 27015, I don't know why it's not working :/
it should be something like this: 192.168.1.XXX

Whatever. I give up. I need an expert to come to my house and do it for me or some ♥♥♥♥. I am a huge console fan and this was major culture shock for me when I discovered how hard it is to set up a freaking private server! Why can't you just hit invite friend and they just join!? WHAT HAS GABEN POSSIBLY DONE TO PREVENT SOMETHING SO SIMPLE FROM OCCURING!?!?

This happens because you have a router, and the ports are closed, if you connect your pc directly to your modem you won't need to forward anything :]
I never had any issues with port forwarding though...

You would think with modern day technology this wouldn't be and issue.
Starscre4M 28 AGO 2014 a las 19:10
Well you can try to enable DMZ instead, it's gonna open all your ports:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1PzVnadOQw

don't forget to check if your gmod is set as sv_lan 0

again the IP you put there is the ipv4 address in your ipconfig.
if it still doesn't work could you take a pic of your ipconfig?

if he only wants to play with a friend or a couple more, it shouldn't be a problem.

iam having similar struggles. iam trying to get 3 friends together to play half life 2 deathmatch. we use tunngle at the moment to connect but i would rather use port forwarding.
so i have spent the last hour sorting it out.

i have activated the ports and using software from '' portforward.com '' i have tested if they are open. it tells me they are. also my friends can see my server listed when they look for it but when they connect they get a message '' lan servers are restricted to local clients ''

i have tried the console command '' sv_lan 0 '' and then
'' ip [ and my ip address ]
and even [heartbeat ] but nothing changes

does anyone out there have any ideas please
