Computer Idiot Here.
Im not new to gaming, just PC Specs. I removed some of the personal stuff (Headset name, etc) but kept 99% of what it gave me in the specs tab on steam.
Hey, I just found out how to get my specs and wanted to know what would/does lag me most in games. As in what would I need to upgrade to get better performance? Heres the specs:

You did not give any examples of games that lag, as you say, so we have nothing to see if you meet the specs for those games.

Give several examples of Steam games that are laggy, please.

Rust, Trove, Starbound, and Gary's Mod all have 30fps or less.

System control, type hardware.
Choose hardware manager. There you see all you have

It looks like freeing up more RAM would be my first suggestion, as far as RUST goes. The minimum RAM for RUST is 8 GB

MINIMUM:
OS: Windows 7 64bit
Processor: 2 ghz
Memory: 8 GB RAM
DirectX: Version 9.0
Storage: 8 GB available space

Okay, thanks. Now am i correct saying that deleting/stopping backround apps increases RAM?

Ill do that when I get on my pc, thanks.

Yes, it can surely help. Go to the Process Monitor in Windows and see what is eating up RAM.

You can also try increasing the page file (virtual memory) in Windows, and that 'maybe' can help some, although not as good as actual RAM of course.

See this support page also...

Built my own server and personal computer, here are a few tips that might help:

Unless your ram is maxed out and your computer is saving to it's swap file, increasing ram will have roughly 0% effect. Closing background applications will likely free up ram, windows does tend to move them to swap if they are out of focus/minimized, but not 100% clear on when or to what extent, so closing is likely your best bet. That said, some small apps use little to no ram, where something like a web browser with multiple tabs open would be worth closing.

CPU = central processing unit
GPU = graphics processing unit (graphics card or integrated graphics) *integrated means it is built into the cpu chip - 1 chip has both cpu and gpu, usually GPU is very basic - not powerful

Games typically rely heavily on GPU, and it's more common to see a prebuilt computer with a good CPU and lame GPU, then to see one with a good GPU and lame CPU, because literally everything relys on CPU, where a GPU may not be as important for things like browsing the web or writing an email. A graphics card upgrade may be a good way to increase FPS.

Load times are based on your drive, hard disk drives (HDD) load much slower then solid state drives (SSD), and upgrading to a SSD will significantly improve boot times for your computer, and load times for all applications. SSD's do have endurance considerations, and Inte's Optane drives that will be released early 2017 promise significantly better performance and endurance.

CPU may also be a consideration, at a certain point, if you have enough ram, and you have a great GPU, your CPU can be a bottleneck. Some games rely more heavily on CPU then others, so it has to be taken case by case.

The best way to find out on windows is to hit Ctrl Alt and Delete at the same time. It will bring up a menu, select Task Manager and spend some time looking at the results while the game is running. Go back into your game, play for 10-30 seconds, and look back at the graphs. If ram is 100% used up - get more ram. If your CPU is sitting at or near 100%, look for a better CPU. It will not show GPU on this tool, but for games, any upgrade in GPU is likely going to boost FPS, and/or allow you to run at higher settings.

To get an idea of how "good" one CPU or GPU is compared to another you can use synthetic benchmarks. A benchmark is a computer program that gives the chip a workout and grades it's performance. It will assign it a score, a number that can be used to compare that chip to other chips, the higher number is better in theory. Keep in mind that the people that make the benchmark software make up how the scoring works too, so you have to compare 2 scores from the same benchmark software. The best type of benchmark is one that is as close to what you will be doing as possible. You can often find benchmarks that grade hardware on how well it can handle a game. If you can find one of the games you plan to play, then that is a good one to go off of. If you don't want to get that technical, you should still do fine comparing with a more general benchmark like passmark (https://www.cpubenchmark.net/)

Keep in mind that in general you might find AMD's CPU's run hotter and don't do as much per core that intel's chips do. I have an 8 core amd chip in my personal computer, and a 4 core chip in my server, the 4 core chip is on par, or slightly outperforms the 8 core according to passmark's benchmark overall. It's usually better to have 1 good core then 2 half good cores. If your program is heavily multithreaded, the CPU can have more then 1 core working on it at the same time, but from my experience I would rather not bet on that.

When you can get to your computer OP, also please post screenshots of your installed programs. You can take the shots from control panel/programs --programs and features and upload them to imgur.com. It is free. Then, post those links here.

Problematic software that you don't disable or uninstall can cause issues with Steam and games sometimes. Make sure we can see all the programs, please, so take multiple shots if needed.

Also, you have a HP 15 Notebook PC and Windows 8.1 so maybe there are some manufacturer official driver updates for the computer, but we need the model number of the computer, exactly. There may be an auto detect tool on HP that you can use, or look on the front or side or other location to identify it. Or there may be a service tag number.

In short, please also post the model number of the computer when you can. Thanks.

Oh - quick tip.

If you want to increase your performance quickly without upgrading your computer, check the game settings - you can often lower several things without seeing much of a difference.

*** One big thing most people overlook is the screen resolution, if it does not bother you to play in a slightly lower resolution, you may see a decient jump in performance. Keep this in mind when you are looking at your next computer. The bigger the screen resolution, the better the card you will need to run it.

Quick Update, I found a guy who can help me and I can't find the model number of my PC. I bacically learned everything I needed from this thread, and will probably store it somewhere. Thanks for the help and apologies for not getting the photos.
