Can't install steam - Windows 10 pro
I've upgraded from windows 8.1 to windows 10 pro not too long ago. After few weeks/months, i've finally found free time to start playing again. But when I downloaded steam and tried to install it, something went wrong. After double clicking the installer, simply nothing happens. I've tried double clicking the installer with task manager open. When I double click it, explorer.exe goes to 18% cpu usage constantly. It will never stop, it remains at 18% usage until I restart the computer. It can be seen here:
http://tinypic.com/m/jj1ro8/1
After double clicking it two more times, the explorer usage goes to around 50%. I believe this means that multiple processes are being started in an attempt to install, but they're getting stuck in some kind of loop.
I then tried to run the installer as admin. Now, instead of explorer usage increasing, this happened:
http://tinypic.com/m/jj1rog/1
Service Host: Local System (12) went to 17%, which is around the 18% usage it took from explorer the first time I tried to open it normally.
Also, after I try running it as admin, explorer.exe crashes completely, and I have to restart the computer.

I'm using windows 10, Malwarebytes Anti-malware and Windows Defender. Never installed AVG or anything. This is a fresh windows 10 install, done not more than 3 months ago. Never had any problems installing any other software. I don't think I have any software that could interfere with steam installed.

Tried to google this, no sucess. First time using a forum for help. Any ideas?

Edit: Oh, and this is what the task manager looks like when there's nothing going on:

Edit2: Tried to do register cleaning, but there is absolutely nothing related to steam in registry.
I have no folders related to steam whatsoever in the computer. The only steam-related program I have is the installer itself, downloaded from the website.

Edit3: It's a ASUS G75VW-DS72, running windows 10 64 bit. Its processor is a Core i7 3610QM

Post the model number and model of this computer. If it is custom built, post the exact motherboard that you have, please.

Also, is that Windows 10 32 or 64 bit ?

Thank you. I will have a look at this. Meanwhile, please post screenshots of ALL of your installed programs from control panel and programs and features view. We need to see them all, please, so take multiple shots if needed.

EDIT..If you see this in time, please ignore this post above this edit.

So this was an upgrade to W10 then ?

"ASUS will not support upgrade to WIndows 10 for G75VW "

And no drivers for W10 in the drop here. Only as far as W 8.1, if I have the exact computer here of course....

Daamn, I guess that's a thing. But the W10 installation went smoothly, and steam is basically the only thing I'm having issues with. Shouldn't I be able to do something in order to troubleshoot what's going on? Like, steam is literally the only thing I'm having compatibility issues with.

You do have possible conflicting software there installed now and we can try to troubleshoot this to the limit of that possibility but your computer does not officially support Windows 10.

uTorrent
CCleaner (monitoring mode probably)
Skype
K-Lite Mega Codec Pack

Thanks. I just installed ccleaner, but the monitoring mode is disabled. I'll uninstall it.
Skype has also just been installed, I had the same problem before its installation.

I'll uninstall them all anyway, and I will try running steam again. Thanks for your help, i'll be back to post the results shortly.

You are welcome. There is a possibly easy test to perform if you don't see good reults when you come back...

Boot your PC into safe mode with networking. It has to be with networking enabled. Launch Steam (as long as the Steam files are healthy of course) in this safe boot, and try to log into your account. Notice any changes you see and reply with that next, please.

You can try to contact with steam support but im sure they'll say ''Check your background programs anything blocking steam like anti-virus'' etc.

Hey. After uninstalling the 4 programs mentioned, I tried installing steam, no sucess.
Booted into safe mode with networking on. There I was able to install steam, update and login without any problem. Back to normal boot, with steam already installed, it went back to square one: Double click, nothing, explorer.exe constantly at high usage.
So looks like there's some driver conflict or something going around. This is very weird for me, since I had exactly the same programs I have now, even more, back when I was using windows 8.1, and never had any problem of this kind.
Any idea about what I should do next, other than trying to uninstall a couple more programs that are possibly conflicting and checking? Or is this just about the best to do right now?
The Giving One Sep 18, 2016 @ 1:32am
Well done, as that seems to confirm that you still have conflicting software in a normal boot.

I would do this...
Do a clean restart of your PC into normal Windows. Let the computer fully boot up, giving plenty of time for all processes to start and be fully running.

Go to WIndows start and click it and type msconfig and run that and go to the services tab and "hide all Microsoft services" and post screenshots of all that is left.

I've restarted the computer. However, since steam was installed (it did install succesfuly on safe mode), Steam Client Bootstraper was on the startup list, already slowing down the computer. I've disabled it, and I will restart the computer again and post screenshots shortly.

That is probably because you have Steam set to launch on boot of your computer, or it is done so by default from when you successfully installed it in safe mode with networking.

I recommend you turn that off when possible and always launch Steam manually after you computer fully boots up. Just don't forget that you have that disabled as of now, as you will need to undo that momentarily.

Steam then settings then interface, from the top left of the client. Top box is "run Steam when My computer starts." Make sure that is not checked.

Ok, did that. Steam now is NOT set to run when computer starts.
Here's the services screenshot:

AutoDesk Desktop
Any Epson process
MalwareBytes should not be a problem, but keep an eye on it for now.
TeamViewer 11
VIA Digital Mixer

These are ones I would be concerned with. You don't need them when you game or at all depending, so disable them and test this again.

You can also do this.......I prefer uninstalling over disabling, but this is up to you. You have already proven Steam works in safe mode with networking, so we need to simply find the conflict in normal Windows and get rid of it.

Disabling Background Applications
