Steam not connecting using ethernet cable.
Hey everyone.

I've been having an issue with steam for a month now. I can't seem to be able to connect to it. I'm using my school's internet (which like I said is ethernet, no wifi here) and nothing is working. I went to ask the technical support team if they were blocking steam and they said they didn't know (they then checked and it wasn't blocked. However, the website isn't blocked but steam itself is) just says that it's not able to connect. I can only play offline.

TLDR: I can't play games online using my ethernet cable. I think my school's internet is blocking it but I can access steam's website (that's how I am able to write here). So it doesn't really make sense.
Is there anything I can do ?

Also, I keep saying it's blocked but I don't know if it is or not.
Anyway, thanks.

Check those:
Programs Which May Interfere with Steam (Link)
Spyware, Malware, Adware, or Viruses Interfering with Steam (Link)
Troubleshooting Network Connectivity (Link)

Most likely the network administrator did block Steam. You have to ask them if there is something that can be done.

I just had this problem for 3 days and this is what I had to do to solve it.
1.) Right click your Ethernet shortcut and click to open your network and internet settings
2.) Click Network and then Ethernet.
3.) Scroll to IP settings. Mine was on manual and on the IPv4.
4.) Switch it to automatic. It should connect to IPv6.
Once this was done I could connect to Steam using just Ethernet connection. I hope this helps anyone in the future with this problem!

This may or may not have 'fixed' a 5 year old thread, given that the user was in school and was almost guaranteed to have been blocked by their school's internet.

Bruh University Internet doesn't block Steam I promise you. Maybe if he was in HS. If you're trying to get around a HS firewall, you wouldn't post on Steam in this way. I was having this same problem for 3 days. I bought an Ethernet Cable but I couldn't connect to Steam with just the Ethernet Connection. Doing what I explained fixed it for me

It's a 5 year old thread and it's not even specified what type of school it is.

My third sentence literally covered that. If he wanted help trying to get around a high school firewall, he would've just said. And it doesn't matter how old if there's no posted solution I tried looking up this problem to fix it myself and this was the first link on Google so clearly it's a problem people've had

I managed to fix it by going to inbound and outbound connection settings. I set everything to default settings. Fixed the issue.

Hope this helps.

ehh NO you did not made a comeback here, School and campus is diffrent, they can have block and prevent of privat use even not allow other pc on network, well guest network maybe.

Why i bother tell this so other dont think its normal to be allwed play games there or other none study idea, its not that simple anymore, and also depend on educations have bandwide for it.

Many do not have that.

It's up to the Education place if they even allow this.

Things and security have change alot sense OP made the post ( 17 Oct, 2016 @ 4:23pm )
Not sure how hard the consequence is today, but aient that Educations own problem to deal with it.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
