It's just sad that smartphones are being pushed so hard on people and it's not only steam.
"You only need a phone for the sms confirmations"
That's the whole point of not buying one.
holds arent necessary. well atleast if you arent a dumb 13 year old who isnt clever enough to watch for his own security himself and sometimes use his brain.
and valve forces and treats everyone like those 13 year olds who cant watch for their security themeselves.
i traded for years on my main account without any confirmation ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and not a single time got hacked or scammed or anything like that. everyone who ever got scammed or hacked are braindead.
every scam and trick can be avoided with common sense.
and to op: u can use the windows authenticator if u dont have smartphone. all u need then is a phone number. just google it. or its also possible to use bluestacks or different android emulator, to pretend like u have smartphone to use the app to confirm ♥♥♥♥.
I already know about this also, but I am not going to post suggestions to new users here on how to bypass security, as that is against the whole idea.
The secuirty is not just about you. It helps to protect the business (Valve), as well as the rest of the community as a whole.
This is already looking like a total repeat of what has been posted time and time again, especially in the megathread. Anything anyone can come up with is almost surely already there in that thread, more than once, too.
i didnt read the previous posts. and wtf? why should my phone number get compromised or used by someone else??? even if someone finds out my number they need to enter the confirmation code sent to it, and obviously they dont have access to that.
idk if its me or u but i dont get what the fck u are talking about
If you use third party tools on the same device (computer) and that computer is compromised with malware, for example, then you are right back to square one.....the account gets hijacked and items go bye-bye.
Two totally seperate devices is the way it will work, and by using your credentials only, not from another "source".
This is all exhaustingly covered time and time again in the megathread, the link I previously posted.
ah yeah, forgot to say. op, as phone number use ur own number, dont get from other source, thats probably true that getting phone numbers from someone else, is risky and shouldnt be done.
And really there is no other option for people than using windows authenticator, if they dont have a smartphone, or one that doesnt support the ♥♥♥♥ app (windows phone). But if you have even a tiny bit of intelligence, that shouldnt be a security risk, because for a person that doesnt have any brain problems and didnt lived in a cave for past 20 years, it shouldnt be a problem to keep your account / pc safe and clear from any viruses and malware, its really not hard just by using common sense. for example all the like 4 years i think that i traded on steam without any confirmations, i didnt had a virus or malware on my pc a single time.
in conclusion: unless you are really dumb or unexperienced, you dont necessary need any confirmations, and still be completely safe.
Just download an android emulator for your PC or use VirtualBox and install Android x86. Then you can use any old phone for the initial text.
Aslo i have Kaspersky as assurance, in case i make a mistake and download something that could harm my pc or steal account informations. Never did a mistake yet, but assurance is always good.
The usual suggestion for that is Malwarebytes.
Antivirus for a virus.
Antimalware for malware.
A virus is a type of Malware. Malware is an umbrella term for any malicious software.
Easily proven by using the search feature of the help and tips forum. You can simply search "Malwarebytes" and see that. Thanks.
Of course, that's because Malwarebytes does so much more than Anti-Virus software. The only reason to use both is because Malwarebytes lacks a firewall.
In the end, just because the infection is not found that does not mean it does not exist though. This is always important to remember. I have seen a case where a user installed and scanned with 4 different programs, and his account was still getting hijacked, even after he found noting at all during those scans with all those antivirus/antimalware programs.
I might be able to dig up that thread, but it is pretty old from what I remember.
EDIT..CORRECTION..The account was getting compromised, not hijacked, if my memory is correct here.
I will just send my items to a friend who then can sell it to a third party or something and i'll be able to get it in cash or a gift.
But i'll never buy anything from the steam market or store again untill valve gets an alternative to steam guard.
