Steam keeps freezing when I start to download apps even after a clean install
I tried downloading a game. Steam froze. Cleared download cache, tried downloading again, Steam froze. Did a clean install. Tried downloading again, Steam froze. I have plenty of hard drive space. There's no reason steam would do this. Please help!

Ok, did those. All drivers are updated did your commands. Tried it... Still freezes. Also note: No virus protector other than windows defender, and windows defender allows steam file access through the firewall. Sooo There's really no reason why this is happening.

There were no issues with the chkdsk command, SFC did it's thing, No errors, or everything was fixed. But steam still freezes.

But Steam still freezes. I have to restart my computer completely to get steam to shut down. End task in Task Manager doesn't do anything.

thats why you check it so it seem not a system issue. that dont ruleout other Driver and Bios issue, dont forget huge diffrence in slow and stop dl and actual pc get frozen.

check windows resource manager is disk 100% busy then dl stop and work as intended. ( know as disk cant keep up and reduce DL to even stop.

ps.
next step could be safe boot mode see steam guide interference issue.

I would check with something a bit more intense like Crystal Disk Mark. Let that run and see if you have any disk issues.

On top of that make sure that your antivirus or firewall isn't blocking anything Steam or game realted.

Also, make sure you're not using something like MSI Afterbuner as that can similarly cause issues.

Then you propbably do have some hardware issue, likely hard drive issue there.

All you can do is keep trying at this point. But if it does turn out your hard drive is borked all you can do is get a new drive and get to reinstalling your OS. So yeah you will lose data under that scenario.

As CF point out what if this was the cause, and now just show it slef as burnout.

its not safe boot mode that cause this, that is just a interference checking issue with what software.

and this will have happend sooner or later, Drive work like that today they either work or dont boot up at all.

maybe this is the cause with frozen pc the hard drive is down and pc cant write to it untill it respond again, and look like steam disk is busy.

"as i mention" ((( dont forget huge diffrence in slow and stop dl and actual pc get frozen. )))
this could be the clue. technicaly thats mean somethinbg is up to its disk or with the disk.

lose cable or bad one or disk itself. ( as CF point out above )

be happend it do under DL, most user experience this in the middle of a game.
and we all scates to our head as say WTF happend here.

I spoke to soon. Alright, so, here's what happened. My computer died. It wouldn't boot up. Turns out, it was a corrupted SSD. Had to take it to the repair shop to have it fixed. Costed an arm and a leg, but now my computer is clean and fresh from the repair shop with a brand new windows. It still freezes.

I had this issue in my newly bought ssd this week. My steam keeps freezing when downloading then will stop after 30s. I notice my ssd goes to 100% too in task manager and I tried the other launcher's and its works fine on downloading games.

I just disable the LPM/Link Power Management on Intel Optane Memory app then restart and after that it works fine now. It's now downloading continuously without freezing/crashing.

You can disable Link Power Management on bios setup too. Hoping it can help you.
