There have been too many login failures

Logging in through browser gives this message:

'There have been too many login failures from your network in a short time period. Please wait and try again later.'

Logging in to Steam itself on the same PC with the same network works without issue. I've tried rebooting, waiting 30 mins and waiting 2 hours. Checked my email to see if any login attempts were made - none were.

This strangely started happening after a friend of mine stopped being able to log into his account, an issue he's currently trying to resolve with support and getting very worrying replies. Is Steam having issues? Should I secure my account somehow?

See if you got a VPN or something like that active in your browser.

nope. as a matter of fact, when I turn on VPN (tunnelbear), I CAN log in via browser. As soon as I turn off the VPN I get logged out and can't log back in again

Start your PC in safe mode with networking. Now try the same method to log in.

Does it work now? If it does it indicates you have some crapware on your system causing this and then it's down to you to find out what it is. It can be browser plugins or other security stuff.

I also tried browsing Steam from Chrome for 30+ minutes via VPN, turned it off, same result again. Cleared browser cache and cookies. Nothing

Ah well, at least this simple test does serve a purpose. Becuase if you did this and it ddn't change anything it does rather discount it being crapware.

So you can at least scrub that from your list.
