Is it possible to play DLC purchased from Steam with a base game not purchased from Steam?
I own the Civilization 6 base game. Not sure where I bought it from 2 years ago, but today I purchased the Rise and Fall DLC content from Green Man Gaming, unaware that it was in effect a Steam purchase. It's really aggravating, because as far as I can tell, it does not explicitly state on their site that purchases are just Steam activation keys, and Green Man Gaming has refused to offer me a refund.

Regardless, my question is, is it possible to play the RIse and Fall DLC from Steam with my Civ 6 base game that was not purchased from Steam?

Thanks for any help!

Downloadable Content

This content requires the base game Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI on Steam in order to play.

right on the store page...

Nope, you can't buy DLC on Steam for a game you don't have on Steam.

Civ6 is only playable on steam

You can’t use the DLC anywhere else...............

If you mean “why can’t I use my pirated version of civ6 with legitimate DLC?” Well the answer to that is fairly obvious

@Satoru If I had a stolen copy of CIv 6, I wouldn't be here asking for help.

Isn’t civ a steamworks title?

Edit: to slow

What Silicon Vampire said is what's written on the Steam store page for the DLC.

But on that site on the right it says Steam as DRM:

You'd think pirates wouldn't ask for assistance on official sites, wouldn't you? The folks behind Game Dev Tycoon have a hilarious story for you.

@ Crazy Tiger thanks, I it see now. I guess I'm a victim of bad web design... it's my fault for only seeing the big purple callout that says "This product requires the base game Sid Meier's Civilization® VI." and fails to mention Steam.

That would be a little more believable if you weren't saying that your copy of the game doesn't include the only DRM that the game uses. I actually went looking after you said this, and turns out that your story doesn't add up. Every legal copy of the game sold uses Steam as its DRM.

Nobody here can or will help you with your pirated copy of the game. If you want to use the DLC, I suggest you buy the game legitimately.

First of all, it does mention Steam. Second of all, it requires the base game of Sid Meier's Civilization® VI, which is only available on Steam and you simply don't have. Once you meet the requirement of owning the base game of Sid Meier's Civilization® VI, it will work fine.

They could have mentioned it in that purple bar, I agree. The Windows version also has Steam mentioned in the Minimum requirements, but the Mac version does not.

But yeah, always check the whole store page.

If you had bought it on Steam then the DLC would work

And I'm having difficulty thinking that if you were one of the literally 5 people that bought it on the Mac store, you'd think somehow "yes instead of using the in-app purchase I will buy on a different website and forget that it uses steam everywhere else"

@Teksura I really have no reason to lie about pirating software and I have no need to prove my integrity to a bunch of anonymous online people. If you're such a great detective, then try reading my question again - maybe you'll notice that I said I bought my copy of Civ around 2 years ago. Do you think it's within the realm of possibility that I have an account under more than one email and maybe I forgot about it? I'm actually in the process of of going through my different email accounts to see if I have more than one Steam account.

I'm not a very technically savvy person, I just like playing video games from time to time and thought maybe someone here could help me, but it looks like the answer is no. If what you say is true and it's only possible to buy CIv 6 from Steam, then why don't you offer me some constructive suggestions on how to figure out a solution.

@Satoru thanks for inadvertently helping me to solve my problem - it looks like I did buy Civ 6 on the Mac store. I wish I'd realized that I could buy DLC directly in-game, cause now I'm out almost 50 bucks.

It's disheartening to see that some of you were bent on trying to prove me a thief, rather than being open to offering a helping hand. I'd like to suggest to all of you that while you're busy patting yourselves on the back for keeping the Internet safe for one more day, that you set aside a few minutes to pull your collective heads out of your collective asses.
