It's just a better place for tech-related discussions.
It's no wonder why someone did not get a response in the Ask Ubuntu website. It's better to post anything Steam-related in the Steam forums if they know which forum to post, such as Hardware and OS. :)
Oh and I forgot - here's the official Linux forum: https://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/
And yes, it should be in the sidebar. We've asked before for it to be added alongside the Deck forum - it's super frustrating.
If your post doesn't get traction here, I'd repost it there or in the Hardware section anyway. You can just reference this thread.
Most likely no one will bat an eye at the cross-posting, happens all the time.
Volunteer Mods would probably have already been on it, unfortunately they are no longer Mods, and I dont often see the Paid Mods do anything unless there has been a report, so I'd just do as Bee said:
If not, then I will have to cross-post and reference my thread in my new thread. Even if cross-posting happens all the time, I do not want to do that unless absolutely necessary.
Thanks everyone. Not that I won't get much help here (no offense). I'm just trying to get my problem with Steam filling up my /var/log/syslog log file resolved, that's all. (chuckles). :)
Check out /etc/syslog.conf (from the top of my head), this allows you configure the syslog daemon and tell it exactly which facilities & levels it should process and how. Add an entry to ignore the Steam entries (or raise the level to log less entries) and you're done.
Also... why is this even a problem to begin with? Linux provides log rotation services, so it's not as if your PC would completely fill up: logs get rotated, archived and eventually removed. Of course assuming that you configured all this in the right way.
Even so, in the end this is a non-issue.
This is the command I use to clean up the journal as root. That command cleaned up more than 1GB of log entries that I do not have a need for in my desktop.
However, this does not answer my question about preventing Steam from cluttering up log entries in /var/log/syslog.
And I have been using Linux for more than 12 years, so I know how to setup Linux. Thank you for your help.
