DO NOT BUY STEAM DECK
I bought the highest end version and it is worthless. you can't download games to it while you play games on your computer, you can't mod games. You can't even connect it directly to your PC to move games over to it instead you have to download them which takes FOREVER. Did I mention if you play games on your PC while a game is downloading to your steam deck the download will STOP? This thing is not a PC is a glorified Vita. Also if you want to use an SD card you have to format it to the Steam Deck which once you do you can't open the SD on a computer anymore to move games to it. This thing is trash. DO NOT BUY!

Note that as per the giant FAQ on the Steamdeck page the steamdeck formats the SD card into ext4. As the steamdeck is a linux system, it uses a linux file system. You can mount ext4 filesystem on windows if you use 3rd party tools or use the Windows Subsystem for Linux

As per above the steamdeck is a linux based system and as such is usually downloading linux native bulids or has packaged the windows files in a way that the emulator understands them. You moving files manually is generally going to mess things up anyway which is why its not recommended to do so

You can set the download to proceed while playing a game in Settings->Download->Allow Downloads during gameplay

None of these are reasons to 'not' buy the steamdeck

Got a better idea how to play Steam games on a subway? Yeah, I rather like my Deck.

Try to play that gaming laptop on your lap (no desk in subway train) with a gamepad. I tried. Not pleasant.

Try to play that gaming laptop holding it while standing up. Good luck finding a control scheme working with that.

Your library is in use when you play games. It is a means of security on Steam's end.

This behavior isn't because of the Steam Deck, but rather because of the Steam Client, and Steam itself.

Normally you only notice it with Family Sharing though, but yeah, you are logged in on two locations, the library is accessable from both locations. One location uses the library, the other location then gets locked.

my advise: Post feedback and suggestions in the correct location

hmm maybe phone with the controller attachment via remote play?

lol that gives me an idea
leave lappy in backpack while using phone with controller attachment, your lappy and phone will be on "adhoc network" better performance for remote play boom all the benefits no downsides

plus with lappy in backpack with lid closed u save battery power meaning more gaming time

No idea where you live but here, loading this web site on the phone on the subway here takes a couple seconds. Both bandwidth and latency are abyssimal and that's assuming there is cellular connectivity available. There's train routes around here with parts not having cellular connectivity at all.

So maybe, just maybe, the Deck is a solution after all. I'm being snarky, of course. It clearly is.

FYI Steam OS is not Windows OS, Steam OS is linux, and they're using ext4 format that not something Windows use, you have to use 3rd party on Windows in order to read the SD card that formated to ext4.

Also Windows games do not run natively on Linux, remember I said Steam OS is linux, now you know, if you want to run Windows games on Steam Deck you have to enable proton on your Steam deck.

If you like I dumb it down for you, install Windows 11 on Steam deck, if you're not willing to learn anything, and don't like linux. Don't be shock if performance is lower, because Windows uses more hardware resource than linux, as well they're still working out all the problems for windows as deck was made in mind using linux.

well tbf dont need cell data at all
u can make wireless adhoc network on ur phone and connect ur lappy to it while lappy sits in backpack, now u can stream games from lappy to phone on wireless adhoc network whereever u go no data connection needed

So we get a solution which is more convoluted and more expensive than a Deck. Running a laptop in an enclosed space is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ idea for obvious reasons. Even more so for a gaming laptop which requires a lot of cooling. Then there's the topic with RF traffic eating into already-limited battery capacity (which gaming laptops tend not to have heaps of). The ergonomics of a phone & gamepad holder ain't too great either, both in terms of weight distribution and screen size and if you go for a bigger screen ergonomics suffer even more. Then there's that ttopic with gaming laptop prices. Oh yeah, weight is an issue with gaming laptops too.

You do you, of course. Enjoy any Frankensteinian solution you can come up with!
