Steam will shut off my connection to the internet if I download anything
I've had an issue with this for over a year and it has frustrated me to the point where I stopped gaming on my PC for a while.

Basically, when I start a download, there is a range of time, from 30 seconds to an entire hour, where the download will go on just fine, and then after that the download causes my computer to cut off from the internet entirely. The graph indicating network and disk speed starts off with a high download speed, and I can distinguish exactly when the internet stops working when the speed starts to decrease slowly. The estimated time goes from 20 mins to 25, to 40, to an hour, to two, to three and so on until it'll say estimated time >1 YEAR, and then the WIFI indicator on my taskbar will show no connection.

I have tried to download on 3 different HDDs, used 3 different networks associated to my router, tried testing my internet speed before and after downloading with very good results, tried limiting my bandwidth, cleared my download cache, etc. I'm genuinely at a loss for words because I've never heard anyone else experience this before and the troubleshooting tips I find online have not helped yet.

PLS help

Still your problem to test with a cable to ruleout its own wifi issue.
multi user on own network that use all bandwide can also do this.

anything lesser then 200gb free also part of the problem to whatever game need update and patch. new title today have past 100gb+ so 200gb is not enough anymore. depend on worst full DL patch some game devs do.

I have roughly 3.6 tbs of free storage on the current hard drive I use. Also I physically cannot directly connect to the router in my house unless I moved my PC several rooms away from where it is now.

there was a reason with it, and why i ask, long distance with wifi connection can lead to disconnection network if signal get cutoff with interference with signal bounces of wall and object or person something pass it.you need another wifi that can be a broadcast closer to you.

ask any shop or technician that can explan this better old term for such was a ( repeater )

ps.
keep in mind many hardcore gamers dont play on wifi or with wifi ppl you can cause latency = LAG to others depend on who is HOST and client some games can do that.

if you are a casual gamer then go ahead, we dont care i only mention this so you dont get angry if lost and bad network is a issue later then play games. ( he who disconnection doing a fight get lost team member and could be the cause to much grieef who is the problem everytime. ( i know you did not ask for this, but ask hardcore gamers they see very diffrent on such topic in lost battle )

you can find many post with my hate to wifi, there is a reason for this. to many broken gamers with ISP on wifi that had 1-3 sec later with voice chat over app , and if wifi was so good why do competions not use it then, dont get me wrong wifi is great for check mail and minor task for work but that not gaming.

It sounds to me like the wifi card itself is dying. It starts sending data, then overheats or otherwise misbehaves, the radio losses connection signal goes to hell. Classic bad radio.

Thats happened to me before on my 7 year old laptop. i was about 10 ft from the router. and I couldnt finish and upload or a download. New wifi card and problems solved. ~35 USD for a cheap intel ax210 (works great so far with my ac router)

Wifi is fine if you lock the channels to stop channel hopping which doesnt work in urban areas, and use anything other the isp routers. I personally only buy used ruckus APs off ebay. Not now of course because the prices are at msrp.
Look what internet speed you have and then set steam to use only 3/4 of it. Or test at what value its fine.

There are two reasons I can think of:
Either your modem or your router doesn't like these heavy connection type download streams. In this case its unfortunately likely a bug in the nic processor of the device.
Try updating the firmware, if that is not possible complain to your ISP.

Here I suspect you may have a modem or router with a Intel Puma 6 or 7 chipset which is known to be buggy like this.

http://www.dslreports.com/tools/puma6
you can test it here, if you have the bug. (they tried to mitigate it with a firmware patch, but after a while it still happens)

The other option I can think off is your router/modem overheating. This causes it to bug out. It may even need a while reset to fix (which it may do automatically).
This one is very easy to confirm. If your modem becomes so hot that it is hard to touch in a specific place, despite it being the case of the device, then you know enough.

In this last case it depends on whether or not it is your device. If it is you can open it up and try to clean it or improve cooling. If not contact the ISP.

Steam Event sale ongoing, problem is we as user forget this every time, and chance is good its your ISP that well sux , might be a hars word for it, but why pack it in in a sweat tone,

Can you use this, we are sorry that your ISP and there partners cant give you max DL to a steam server. im sure steam users is getting better at this every time steam has a event sale , we see alot of network issue. i do not say there can not be a person that has own cable or wifi issue themself, but its same BS every time steam has game on sale.

You can try switch steam DL zone , but wont help if you again in all directions hit same heavy overcrowed lines. or own ISP that is the weakest link with there partners partner.

Dont forget steam handle themself very well doing Covid-19 then all was home, this is still use as sort of proof, we doubt its steam that cant keep up, i have no Issue with someday a ISP kick steam butt, and say no steam you are the slow one now.

this is seen from a network point of view.

ps.
and dont forget we are steam user only here, we have learn this over last 10 years its same BS every time at steam event sale we see way more bandwide issue and connection issue doing it.

problem proof who do it, its here covid-19 actual help us, all was home and max pressure on steam server was a good info we learn doing it.
